Startbahn? We call it "landningsbana" (i.e., landing-strip) in Swedish.
/just a difference
Good that it's getting a real S-bahn connection, we've only got an special express train out to our main airport - and taking that one one-way will set you back over 20€!

20 Euros? That's highway robbery!

A 1-hour subway ride from the closest BART station to the San Fran International Airport costs only $5.50.

^I know! but taking the express bus downtown (or the one to my hood ) is more like 8€. Or, if I'm feeling realy cheap, there's always the local bus that goes to the commuter-rail, hop on that and get of 2km from my house. That works too, but takes a bit more time and not something tourists do.

Time to focus on something else:

How it will look like after the palace is gone:

a vision for the use of the space until the Schloss is back:

Right now it looks like this:

how its going to look in the future:

the old interior:

Thanks for the Schloss segment, Grumpy!

Seems to take ages to get rid of the "palace." I want it gone, and the sooner the better. I don't care about that "interim" art thingy at all. I want the castle back!!!

not quite Berlin, but...

... if you say "Berlin area", I know something about the project to rebuild the Stadtschloss in Potsdam (which is directly on the south-western corner of Berlin).
This is the old one:

It was a ruine after WWII and was destroyed then by the socialist government. Now it is literally NOTHING on this huge square. After some political struggles, they decided to rebuild it, but it is not known how much of it will be like the original and how much will be modern architecture. It will be used as the new parliament for the state of Brandenburg and also Berlin-Brandenburg if they are united in few years (and I definitely think they will).
It could look like this:

Especially the square between the Nicolai-church, the old city hall and the entrance of the Stadtschloss with the Obelisk in the middle will be interesting:

Welcome, sonnenseite, and thanks for the pix of the Potsdam Schloss!

Somehow I'm not very optimistic about its reconstruction, though.

Why not? It is already decided in favor of the reconstruction by the state and the city parliaments. It will be funded by the state, because they desperately need a new building for the parliament (they now still use the old one from socialist times, which is very dirty indeed).

Well, I'm afraid they'll plonk a glass & steel cube onto the site and forget about the Schloss.
