What's going to really hurt the NDP is what they did early on and who they associated with. For example, having Tzeporah Berman a noted environmentalist extremist on a committee advising the government on oilsands policy was beyond stupid as was the whole if do X, Y and Z will gain social license. They could have hired me for a lot less and I would have told them right away that it would be a waste of time trying to placate environmental groups, etc. If they hadn't done any of that nonsense they probably could have sold the majority of people on the carbon tax as long as the proceeds had gone into a special fund to pay for projects announced in advance.

I agree, the execution of some of their policies could have been better. In hindsight, it's hard to argue that the carbon tax worked to get 'social license' like was planned. The opposition to it couldn't care less, they will hate our oil regardless. Though if it did help to get the feds on board, which Trudeau says it did, then that to me says that having the NDP government in power at this moment in time would have been more successful at getting a pipeline built than the cons would be. Despite the rhetoric, their combative nature would not have helped at all, merely hardening the opposition and not helping get the feds on side.

I don't think this matters much though. People here seem to be irrationally opposed to anything other than a conservative government.

If you've got something relevant to post, go ahead. Looks like you don't.

We're talking about if a change of government would kill the project. It's very on topic unless someone else plans on paying for it.

This is a laughable take on the situation.

Totally possible. I just measured 99.58 with "Measure distance" on Google Maps, and my measurement error (I wasn't all that precise) could easily amount to 1.5 km.

Perhaps I’ve underestimated the size of Calgary all along, not that I’ve been to the city though...

Interesting. The completed Calgary ring road will be almost exactly the same length as Shanghai's S20 Outer Ring Expressway, which I measured at 96km.

Of course, the S20 (4 lanes in each direction for the whole length) is just slightly busier than Stoney Trail - it's probably busier than Deerfoot Trail is at rush hour for the majority of every day.

Do you think the transportation department doesn't know how to measure distance?

I was just surprised that Calgary’s that big. Plus the Ring Road doesn’t look that long on the map either.

Calgary's basically 30+km long north to south, and <20km wide east to west, so a ~100km ring road makes perfect sense.

I wish Calgary is similar to Edmonton in size. Feels too spread out.

The metro footprints are quite similar, it's the actual city sizes that are different.

Calgary (and the RR) are not a circle but keep in mind the circumference of a circle is Pi * circumference so solve for diamater and you get ~30km which is pretty much how Calgary measures up end to end.
