urbanlife... what exactly is the "theory" behind the cubes at Sunrose that you refer to? I believe they are simply decks.

Yeah, I'm actually pretty stoked to see how this one turns out. If it can achieve what the renderings do, I think it will be one of the most progressive designs in town. I'd be interested to hear your critique.

honestly it has been a few years since Holst talked about this project to my program so I dont remember what was all said word for word anymore. Yes, they are simply just decks, but if you look at Holst's projects as a whole collection, many architects have theories and ideas that they like to explore that carries from one project to the next.

Holst came in that day and really tried to sell their theory about their work and really fell flat, it was something that would of never flew in college.

Since you are questioning what was said, I will do my best to try and remember, but really I remember more about the 937 because that was the main project to the lecture and not this project.

speaking of Holst, Clinton Condo buyers finally just recently started moving in, after many construction, finish and final permit delays. But some people under contract to buy had mortgage financing pulled and money for downpayments evaporated in the stock market. After nearly being sold out just prior to closing, almost one third of the units are back on the MLS.

Mississippi Lofts also saw units come back as mortgage financing was pulled.

A few John Ross condos sold for 10-13% off already steeply reduced prices in September, but haven't seen a deal since October market crash. Relative 'bargains' are starting to appear for those who qualify for a mortgage.

Tough times to be a developer.

I dunno. I think this could work if executed well. This street would become a Portland museum of architecture of sorts. Shitty townhouses sell for a half million all the time. At least these are unique.

I agree. I think these could turn out cool. The location is difficult, but it might seem less so in a decade. In a way, I wish something like this had been done on a much larger scale in the South Waterfront.

Have to agree.... if you see an architect wearing a black turtleneck, they might as well tattoo 'pretentious diva' or 'pompous asshole' on their forehead.

I hope the project is a success. It will probably all depend on affordability and quality of design. A similar in-fill project in Omaha (http://www.moderneco-homes.com/HomesForSale.aspx) has been very slow to get off the ground. But it's in the middle of the burbs, and there's probably not much demand in Omaha for modern architorture.

I wish there were more projects like this all over the country, and don't really understand why there isn't. It seems the look of modern condos doesn't fly with small residential housing.

No, they're in Boston. They won some awards for reusing chunks of highway pieces on the Boston Big Dig to build mixed-use buildings. Front cover photo (should read the article)

Of course, that was a long time ago; 2004!

I was kidding about the "off the shelf" aspect of the cable-stayed version of the MAX bridge design...

I'll look for that article. Despite the black turtleneck, they sound pretty interesting.
