CLEVELAND | Ameritrust Center | 1,198 FT / 365 M | 60 FLOORS | NEVER BUILT

Proposed for a site just west of Public Square, this tower was designed by KPF for Cleveland-based Ameritrust Bank. The project was approved and two existing mid-rise buildings were demolished to clear the site, but Ameritrust Bank was acquired by Society Bank (now KeyBank) during the early stages of the project and the tower was cancelled. The site remains a parking lot, but rumors are circulating that the owner is planning an office tower - whether it gets built or not remains to be seen.

Site is in red (Image source - Yahoo maps)

All of the following images were scanned from Kohn Pederson Fox: Architecture and Urbanism 1986-1992, which I purchased

View from the northeast - from Cleveland's Free Times weekly paper:

Mockups I photoshopped to show how the tower would appear in the skyline (approximately):

I've never cared for this tower design for Cleveland. Didn't you have a rendering that you photoshopped into the skyline from the Garfield Monument? I'm personally glad it didn't get built...it would have ruined the skyline. Society Center is a much more contextual and interesting design.

I added some updated "renderings". I have to say that while the building itself didn't have any historical context, the massing fit the site well. It definitely would have upset the "pyramid" created by the "Big 3" existing towers, though.

The 12-ish story base is the same height as the Renaissance Hotel; the western lower section is the same height as 55 Public Square (300 ft.); and the main bulk of the tower is placed furthest from the Terminal Tower. Plus, the curved facade of the tower would have made for some amazing reflective views.

ooh :s I'm glad this one didn't get built. I LOVE the Cleveland skyline right now, the Key Tower is hot. I'm happy this project didn't dominate over it.

ps: Cleveland Rocks!

Very true! Luckily we have a few 300-550 footers that will will in those holes over the next 2-3 years...

ps, I am also glad this building wasnt built. I think something better will come along. Key is such a great tower and focal point in the skyline. The crown draws the whole skyline to infinity. Anything taller than it would upset that

Bears a passing resemblance to one of Montreal's tallest (1250 Rene Levesque)
