hkskyline's 2017 in Mdina, Malta

Valletta is only a small part of the Malta experience. Hop on a bus and head out to the smaller towns to explore a whole different urban experience.

Mdina's citadel has a history going back to the Phoenicians. The current name dates from the Arab times meaning "walled city". With its city walls and shady streets, it has a nickname of "silent city".

The ditch around the city walls was dug by the Knights of St. John in the 15th century.

St. Paul's Cathedral dates from the late 17th and early 18th century. Inside, the floors are covered with tombstones of important Maltese nobles and church officials.

Walking further away from the gate are more narrow alleys that were quiet in the early morning.

The Piazza tas-Sur opens up with a wonderful view of the north.

Gorgeous... this brings back so many memories. I went on holiday to Malta for two weeks back in 2004. I stayed in Bugibba but got to explore the entire island (not that hard to do given it's size) including Mdina. I had never been anywhere quite like it... one could easily get lost and enjoy the same view as one 1,000 years prior... so serene and peaceful, especially when compared to the bustling tourist corridors found in other parts of the island.

Extremely quaint. Tiny medieval alleys like these are one of a kind, worth preserving.

Thanks for your pictures to render the atmosphere on here.

Just off the Mdina's walls is the Domvs Romana, the remains of a Roman townhouse that was found in 1881 and dates from the 1st century BC. Some of the mosaics have survived and are on display in th is small museum.

The streets are quiet during the day but it will be far more busy at night when the bars and street market opens.

St. Paul's Church was bult in 1675 and its grotto underneath is believed to be the cave where the saint preached during his visit to Malta.
