410 East 8th St

I've always wondered about this old abandoned 1938 house at Neches St.

TCAD has the fifth of an acre valued at $618K, while the "improvement" is valued at just $1k.

Wow the rest of the half block is assessed at only $2.4M. Seems a little low, but I am sure there are many variables besides the zone designation itself.

Is this the house you're talking about?

I can't believe I've never really noticed before.

Yes! Exactly that one. It really blends in until you notice it and then you can never ignore it if in the area.

Too bad it isn't fixed up, it could be a location for a live-action version of "Up."

Is this house still there? I noticed on the Historic Landmark Commission's website that it is supposed to be demolished

If you check it out Streetview, it looks like it was being rehabbed in February 2014.

I just noticed that right behind that house is a candidate for the ugliest building in Austin:

That hideous smart car parked in front adds a nice touch.

That white sign with the maroon letters says AAR Inc. - Asbestos, Abatement & Demolition. Also, the documents from the Historic Landmark Commission were dated March 24, 2014, so I'm not sure they'd be rehabbing something in February only to turn around and propose to demolish it in March.

That was almost a year ago, though. I haven't been to that part of downtown in ages, so I was just curious if it was still there.

I guess it might still be there. On the City's website it still shows pending

I love how the description is "Total demo of home. Circa 1938" but the work type is "Remodel." I wasn't ware that demolishing one's home is considered remodeling it.

Oh, come on now, that can't be Austin, are you sure that's not a picture of early post-Soviet modernization in Moldova or Belarus?
