^That was the plan in the late 1800s when the current city plan was drawn. The last bits are only now being filled in for that plan (but that's a far corner of the Inner City - suburbs go on for a loooooooong bit outside that) Before this Stockholm looked very much like what it was: one of the worst cities in Europe. Sweden wasn't always rich...

I'd say political stability, staying out of the Wars and continued industrialisation and increased productivity. Back in the late 1800s we were alot poorer than, for example, Argentina.
