They're not boarded up. They're louvers, for ventilating (mostly) all of the broadcast equipment.

hmm, but I assume theyll turn back into offices once 1WTC is completed because that building will also house broadcast offices/space.

Wow, this is an incredible shot. not only capturing the ESB at a particular point in time, but knowing what disaster was about to happen a short while later.

Thanks for posting.

Anyone know what happened to those round, black windows on the very top of the mooring mast? If they even are windows.

I read through most of this thread, but I didn't see mention of this and I have always wondered...

Above the 86th floor observation level and on only on the East side, there are slanted windows that look like an Air-Traffic control tower. Considering there are two major airports to the East of ESB, is that what it is?

Don't get your hopes up. That broadcast space could quickly become server space. Well ventilated, reinforced floors are hard to come by these days. That's if the broadcasters decide to leave. They might decide to keep their ESB site as a backup, given the likelihood of a disruption at the downtown site.

I think they were meant to be portholes for beacons; which were never installed.

However, I did find this chilling video of a National Geographic photographer documenting the changing of the red light at the very top of the antenna mast.
