For $60,000 A Month, Live In A Sky-High Penthouse Designed By Frank Gehry

Meredith Galante
August 1st 2012
Business Insider

For $60,000 a month you can live in the penthouse of the tallest residential building in the Western Hemisphere—for now at least.

The New York by Gehry building, designed by Frank Gehry, towers 870 feet above the streets of Manhattan. The skyscraper sits on Spruce Street, over looking the construction site at One World Trade Center.

Depending on which of the three penthouses you pick, rent will range from $45,000 to $60,000 a month, according to the New York Daily News.

The kitchens in the units are equipped with luxuries such as six-burner Miele stoves and Sub-Zero icemakers.

The building offers an indoor pool, baby grand piano, and personal Pilates rooms to its renters.

There was a great piece on this building in a copy of the Daily News today, but they still get some details wrong. It doesn't have the highest residence in the western hemisphere.

High life: First look inside the $60,000 per month penthouse at New York by Gehry

Quote:

It’s the bathroom at the top of the world.

From the tub in the penthouse of the New York by Gehry skyscraper on Beekman St., you can see to the Catskill Mountains. As you wash your face at the sink, you can look in the mirror and see the rising One World Trade. And as you lather up in the shower, take a gander at the Woolworth Building.

It’ll cost $45,000 to $60,000 a month to live in the penthouses in the tower, which offers the ultimate bragging right: there is no higher apartment in the Western hemisphere.

"You're higher than the helicopters up here," said Cliff Finn, president of New Development Marketing at Citi Habitats, charged with renting the three 850-foot-high units. "These are the best apartments in the top rental building in the world by the top architect in the world.”

One of the most beautiful residential towers in the world. Is this taller than Trump World Tower?

Frank Gehry Secures Win For Manhattan Skyscraper

Quote:
Acclaimed architect Frank Gehry has won the 2011 Emporis Skyscraper Award for his 76-storey “8 Spruce Street” tower in Lower Manhattan, a building that now stands as the tallest luxury residential building in New York.

Second and third place went to the Al Hamra Tower in Kuwait City and the Etihad Tower in Abu Dhabi, respectively.

The victory for 8 Spruce Street marks the third winning building to come from New York’s 3rd, and a first win for Gehry. The Sofitel New York Hotel won the first Emporis award in 2000, with New York’s Hearst Tower earning a nod in 2006.

The building is also known as the The Beekman or New York by Gehry.

Over 220 buildings from around the world were in the running for the coveted award, but it was Gehry’s stainless steel creation that won over the panel.

“8 Spruce Street stands out even in Manhattan’s already remarkable skyline. It is a major new architectural landmark for New York,” said one of the judges.

Frank Gehry's first skyscraper named best in the world
Architect beat 220 rivals to take crown

6 December 2012

Quote:
Frank Gehry’s first skyscraper, 8 Spruce Street in Manhattan, has been named the best in the world.

The tower, also known as New York by Gehry and The Beekman, won this year’s Emporis Skyscraper Award.

With its distinctive undulating facade, it was chosen for its “aesthetic and functional design” by the editors of the construction project database.

It beat off competition from 220 skyscrapers completed in 2011.

The jury said: “8 Spruce Street stands out even in Manhattan’s already remarkable skyline. It is a major new architectural landmark for New York.”
