The US Census 2010 has just started to roll out data from Summary File 1 which includes more detailed Asian, Native American, Hispanic or Latino & Pacific Islander groups than the recently released Demographic Profile did. The first two states released are Alabama & Hawaii. I will add data for Oregon, Washington, Alaska (June 30, 2011) & Idaho as soon as they become available.

NOTE: There's no data for Arab/Middle Eastern, European, West Indian or Subsaharan African groups with this release.

Here are some of the largest ethnic, racial, tribal alone (not mixed) and Hispanic or Latino groups for Hawaii, Honolulu MSA, Hawaii, Maui & Kauai Counties that have been released or are available so far.

Hawaii
1 Filipino alone: 197,497
2 Japanese alone: 185,502
3 Native Hawaiian (Kanaka Maoli) alone: 80,337
4 Chinese (except Taiwanese) alone: 53,963
5 Puerto Rican: 44,116
6 Mexican: 35,415
7 Korean alone: 24,203
8 Spaniard or Spanish: 23,660
9 Black or African American alone: 21,424
10 Samoan alone: 18,287
11 Vietnamese alone: 9,779
Total Population: 1,360,301

Honolulu, HI MSA
1 Japanese alone: 149,701
2 Filipino alone: 142,238
3 Chinese (except Taiwanese) alone: 50,833
4 Native Hawaiian (Kanaka Maoli) alone: 47,951
5 Puerto Rican: 27,221
6 Korean alone: 22,179
7 Mexican alone: 21,580
8 Black or African American alone: 19,256
9 Samoan alone: 17,154
10 Spaniard or Spanish: 16,481
11 Vietnamese alone: 8,887
Total Population: 953,207

Hawaii County
1 Japanese: 18,086
2 Filipino: 15,834
3 Native Hawaiian (Kānaka Maoli): 15,812
4 Puerto Rican: 9,520
5 Mexican: 5,868
6 Spaniard or Spanish: 3,523
7 Marshallese: 1,998
8 Chinese (except Taiwanese): 1,609
9 Black or African American alone: 1,020
10 Korean: 1,005
Total Population: 185,079

Maui County
1 Filipino: 27,314
2 Japanese: 11,449
3 Native Hawaiian (Kānaka Maoli): 11,440
4 Mexican: 6,129
5 Puerto Rican: 5,179
6 Spaniard or Spanish: 2,242
7 Tongan: 1,211
8 Chinese (except Taiwanese): 1,040
Total Population: 154,834

Kauai County
1 Filipino: 12,108
2 Japanese: 6,264
3 Native Hawaiian (Kānaka Maoli): 5,097
4 Puerto Rican: 2,196
5 Mexican: 1,837
6 Spaniard or Spanish: 1,414
Total Population: 67,091

The following are by Multiple (or total) Responses (alone or in combination/mixed). These are the largest groups that have been released or available so far. This is definitely where Hawaii really stands out when compared to most other states mainly because it has such a high multi-ethnic, multi-racial population (highest by percentage & 5th highest in raw numbers).

NOTE: I could not find any data for multiple responses for individual Hispanic or Latino groups (e.g., Puerto Rican, Mexican, etc) so I just included the total.

*The biggest surprise for me was just how fast the Hmong population has grown in Alaska. I've known for a while now that many have been relocating there from California, Minnesota & to a lesser extent straight from Laos & Thailand but I was guessing the population was going to be around 1,500-1,800 not over 3,400! Up 3,143 from the 2000 Census!

*Over 1,000 for ANC
