That's round the back of the old, 1961, Millard Sheets Scottish Rite Masonic Temple at 4357 Wilshire (across from Wilshire United Methodist church and the Ebell Club).
The 1902, John C Austin Higgins/Verbeck/Hirsch mansion on Lucerne (in the background), also seen before on NLA, was the giveaway:

As has already been mentioned here, the former temple opens as a museum next year.

The house was moved to 637 S Lucerne in 1923 from Wilshire & Rampart to make way for the Arcady, now the Wilshire Royale (as HossC was just reminding me).
The home is for sale (lots of pix at link). The owners are asking for only about half of its estimated value.


I thought Lloyd was a Shriner, not a Mason (?)

One can be both a Mason and a Shriner ....simultaneously.

The Higgins-Verbeck was actually moved to Windsor Square in 1923 rather than 1924, as the Conservancy has it.

My stepfather had a Shriner fez....I thought is was all very strange. Masons are cultish and weirdly rely on blood lines.

Before he built his enormous estate Greenacres, Harold Lloyd owned and lived in a house only a few blocks from where the Scottish Rites Temple now stands. The house is on the Southeast corner of 5th and Irving. Unfortunately it's been in bad shape for years and is probably the most rundown house in Windsor Square. I'm not sure who lives there but it has a definite Grey Gardens vibe.

The 1921 house last sold for $60K in 1971. Lloyd had paid $125K for it in 1923. Zillow pegs it at about $4 million now.

One source states Barraclough's was featured in Architectural Digest. I suspect the source is referring to some interior residence shots from 1957 and not the restaurant, despite its advertised million dollar cost. http://hdl.huntington.org/cdm/compou...coll5/id/10187 I believe we have seen a glimpse of Barraclough's or a successor "Dublin's Food & Fun" as listed in the 1960CD or Loehmann's as listed in 1987CD) but that post is momentarily elusive.

I think the Zody's or White Front was "Britts Department Store - 6310 West Third Street." I vaguely recall someone claiming the structure started out as a maternity ward and hoped to find out more of the structure's history. A cursory permit search for 6310 W Third St. reveals that the bulk of the structure was permitted in 1961 onward and that the property was originally owned by USC. A 1949 permit (that is not viewable on line) indicates a preexisting structure. Could it have been the maternity ward?
