They may be making room for the giant crawler crane they'll use to put up the tower cranes with.

I am no expert either but now that the diaphragm walls are complete i believe they still need to drill piers before they they can set a tower crane or begin going vertical up or down with the building.

If they are following normal top down construction practices, the next step is to pour the support columns. Excavation would start after that.

That makes sense. The time frame on the FAA crane permit stated the beginning of crane work would be in July.

So are they adding the support columns now? Just checked the camera and there is some excavation going on. It kinda looks like the support columns are already installed.

Doing top down would involve drilling caissions or doing LBEs (load bearing elements) and neither have been installed as of yet. July sounds about right for a tower crane if they are going to be doing it conventionally. We'll see though.

Awesome to see excavation finally going on! I wish floor plans for the hotel section would be posted so we can see just how they managed to fit so many rooms into such a small space.

The tower crane permit was filed today. This is the first tower crane permit for a large project (300' or more) to be filed in around two years.

I noticed that as well, just when it was starting to get interesting. Hopefully it will be back online soon. In the meantime here's a street level shot from today.

You can be our construction camera, thanks for the picture! Hopefully the camera comes back online. I like to watch the time lapse at the end that oxblue does, like with the JW.

I walk by there during my lunch hour almost every day. They're definitely making progress, though all of it's in the pit at the moment.

One thing's for sure: Cesar Chavez is going to be a nightmare when that thing finally comes online.

White Lodging always seems to move at break neck pace. If I’m not mistaken, all the same companies that built the JW are working on this project. The JW opened early, incredibly rare for a project of its size. Seems like Marriott Cesar Chavez is also on pace to be completed on time.

This hotel's website is getting updated occasionally. It looks like the name they're going with is "Austin Marriott Downtown", and is opening in July 2020.
