Calgary is the 3rd largest city in Canada by population (1,240,000) and is the largest city of the Calgary Census Metropolitan Area in Alberta (containing 1,393,000, the 4th largest in Canada).
Downtown is located on a gentle bend of the Bow River which forms its Northern boundary. I will define Downtown as including the adjacent districts of Downtown Commercial Core, Downtown West End, Eau Claire, Downtown East Village, and Chinatown, as well as Beltline to the South of those districts.
This thread will focus on the features along the stretch of the Bow River adjacent to Downtown.
Fort Calgary:
On the Eastern edge of Downtown East Village, this historic site is a park with the outline of the long-demolished fort and a museum and recreated barracks.
River Walk:
Pedestrian and bicycle paths line the Southern bank of the Bow River as well as a pedestrian bridge across the smaller Elbow River where it feeds into the Bow.
St. Patrick's Bridge and Island:
Connected to the River Walk is this pedestrian bridge which crosses the Bow River. It traverses across St. Patrick's Island in the middle of the river, and an offshoot pedestrian bridge provides access to the recently redeveloped semi-natural park on the island.
More River Walk:
After crossing back to the South bank of the Bow River, the waterfront trails continue closer to the downtown core and pass below several automobile bridges and a light rail bridge.
Centre Street Bridge:
This Bow River crossing structure was built in 1916.
Sien Lok Park:
This greenspace adjacent to the river is closest to the Chinatown district.
Prince's Island Park:
Several pedestrian bridges lead to another island park in the middle of the Bow River.
Peace Bridge:
Close to Prince's Island Park is this span designed by Santiago Calatrava.
More river and bridges, near Downtown West End:
Calgary Soldier's Memorial:
On the North bank of the river is this striking plaza with views to the highrises.
