I'm assuming that those are just your favorite.

I can see how this topic might become kinda controversial...

How about a top 10 city population list? I will exclude Texas for obvious reasons. & not to mention, everybody may consider the "South" different on geography alone.

1---Jacksonville, FL
2---Memphis, TN
3---Charlotte, NC
4---Nashville, TN
5---Louisville, KY
6---Atlanta, GA
7---Miami, FL
8---Raleigh, NC
9---Tampa, FL
10--New Orleans, LA

There will be a 50 different list. Hopefully no foul play.

In no order, not including Alabama...

Jacksonville, Ponte Vedra, St. Augustine
New Orleans, LA
Charleston, SC
St. Simons, GA
Nashville, TN
Destin, FL
Chattanooga, TN
Asheville, NC
Raleigh, NC
Savannah, GA

Im not sure I even believe that list -- but its a start.

There's no need to list the top 10 by population. Just look up Census Bureau stats or something.

Gauging a city's population by looking only inside it's formal geopolitical boundaries is not necessarily the most appropriate way to define a city's true "size".

An alternative head-count can be taken by looking at respective MSA's. This is more respectful of today's interconnected urban landscapes and avoids the issue of carving out vital districts from the heart of a community.

Southeastern metropolitan "core" cities ranked by size of their respective statistical area populations: (with nationwide rankings in parentheses)
  1. Miami (7)
  2. Atlanta (8)
  3. Tampa (19)
  4. Orlando (27)
  5. Charlotte (34)
  6. Virginia Beach (35)
  7. Nashville (38)
  8. Jacksonville (40)
  9. Memphis (41)
  10. Louisville (42)

If Louisville is disqualified due to portions of its statistical area boundaries falling within Indiana, the runner-up would be:
  • Richmond (43)

I'm pretty sure Atlanta has already surpassed Miami this year for that sweet #7 Metro spot.

You missed the humor I was attempting to poke at the thread starter.

But I guess I understand your post, considering your city jumped from #9 to #3 with the stated opinion.

Well, frankly, I was baffled as to the intended purpose of the thread as stated and the precision of its suggested methodology.

But, yeah... I didn't exactly mind seeing Tampa's status climb.

Truthfully, though I couldn't let Jacksonville get by as #1 without knocking it down a peg... Sure, Jax has the highest city population, but its population density ranks 52nd among the 60 largest southeastern cities, and dead last among the 19 Florida cities on that list.

Don't get me wrong...I think Jacksonville is a beautiful city in a great setting. I just find that appropriate context is missing when its data is compared to other cities. Jacksonville's municipal boundaries encompass a whopping 767 sq. miles of land, or nearly the entirety of Duval County. That figure is greater than the next ten largest Florida cities combined, which average a geographic size of only 65 sq. miles. in comparison.

If Florida's other cities extended their boundaries county-wide in a similar manner, Jacksonville's top spot in the state's population rankings would drop to #7.

You know better.

According to the 2008 estimates straight from the Census Bureau, the Triad CSA is at 1,552,495 and the Triangle CSA is at 1,690,557. And if you're going to use the CSA stats for those two metros, they should have been used for all.
