How Many People within 100 km (62 mi) of Edmonton

There are so many books on this, businesses looking for this info for expansion and location, pensioners wanting to retire close enough to a major centre etc. There are threads on it over at skyscrapercity.com.

http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=300674

Does anyone have the tools to draw a line around Edmonton on Google or something similar and figure this out?? The 62 miles is the "hour" commute that many feels is within reason.

Maybe there are some urban planners on here??

Drew a circle around Edmonton @ 62 miles, but Google Earth isn't great at showing what towns are included in that radius without the user zooming in. Area basically runs as far south as Ponoka, as far east as Vegreville, as far north as about 20 kms south of Athabasca, and as far west as the west shore of Wabamun Lake.

The actual metro region that is used for the census is not even close to being circular. It's more like a rectangle. I wonder how the numbers would change if you used a true circle.

That's what I did. It includes Ponoka, Blackfalds, Rimbey, Westlock and so on.

Did you actually add up the population within that circle or was your 1.1 million just a guestimate?

That would certainly take more time.

You could do it with a GIS program, using the smallest census divisions that fall within said radius. It's very possible and easy to do with the right data set.

Nope. I hate GIS. If someone has the financing, I'll pass it off as a job to one of the techs here. Otherwise, you gotta find someone else.

EEDC should pay to get it done...its a great way to advertise and used commonly elsewhere:

"1.5 million people live within commuting distance of the city centre..."

^Once the province is done with the ring roads, we can start lobbying for regional commuter rails

Edmonton CMA 1,124,000

I'm guessing within 62 miles... probably around 1,220,000 or so..
