Blues Venues in Vancouver Area

okay so i've been here almost a year, and i've yet to find a good blues venue, mind you aside from the Yale Hotel, i haven't heard of any blues venues in the city.

i figured we're all a cultured bunch here that goto the pub for something other then getting hammered, finding some cheap woman, and listening to some moron think he's the world champion karoke singer. so, someone out there has to know of some good live blues spots in the city.

The Yale is the only spot in town, far as I know... and it's one of the best I've been to. This isn't Chicago and you aren't going to get the same vibe but at the Yale you definitely get some serious acts in one of the most casual clubs in the city. For lesser known more modern independent jazzy blues acts you might catch a few out by Commercial Drive or down in Gastown but you'd really have to be in the scene to know who is who and where they are playing.

i've been to one or two of the places on commercial that play "jazz" and/or "blues" but they weren't so great.

i know this isn't Chicago, and its not a popular genre of music, but i maybe expected a bit more

I've been to a small bar at 29th and Main while there was a blues band playing. It was a long time ago, we had to leave early, and I don't remember too much about it, so I don't have much of an opinion on the place. I've never been to the cellar on Broadway near Alma, but it's supposed to be a jazz bar.

For the blues, real blues you need to head to the scummiest, nastiest bars that you can find. Like someone mentioned earlier you need to know who is playing and where, but believe it or not, some of the bars in the DTES have good blues on certain nights.

thats the kinda blues i'm talking about. i'm planning a small pub crawl on saturday nite after the Chilliwack show at the PNE. turns out, we've voted on The Black Frog on Cambie and Water and the Yale Hotel. still looking for a few shitty pubs for the rest of the evening.

Blue Mountain Park in Coquitlam just had a Blues fest... it was pretty good. They have one every year.

Also found this site: http://www.vancouverbands.com/origin...uesandjazz.htm

Might help a bit, if only to call up some of those guys and ask them where they recommend.

The problem with Vancouver's scummiest bars is that you're likely to find a crappy DIY hardcore punk band as opposed to a blues band. Blues just doesn't thrive in Vancouver.
