I like them. Any idea if/when they will actually be running on NG?

The vessels are dual-fuel, so they can operate on natural gas or ultra-low sulphur marine diesel. BC Ferries intends to operate the vessels with natural gas to improve its environmental footprint and reduce operating costs.

So day 1? I didn't think the infrastructure was available yet at the Terminals.

It could be that they plan on bunkering straight off a barge?

Not certain if the plan has changed. But when announced the plan was to do it the same way as diesel.

During a period that the ship is not in operation a tanker drives into the lower car deck, the connect the houses and fill it up.

And two other ferries are being converted as well.

Ferries has announced that they have awarded a $140 million contract to Remontowa Ship Repair Yard S.A. of Gdansk, Poland to conduct mid-life upgrades to the Spirit of British Columbia and the Spirit of Vancouver Island – making them capable of operating on LNG.

Thanks for the link. I didn't know regular trucks could transport LNG, I thought the pressure was too high. I wonder if Fortis will find it worthwhile to build a pipeline to Tsawwassen, assuming all filling can be done there as boats rotate through.

I don't think LNG pipelines would work. All the LNG proposals being proposed used normal natural gas pipelines to get the gas to the terminal then have a liquefaction plant at the terminal just before being loaded onto a ship or tanker.

The tanker trucks are vacuum jacketed and designed for cryogenic temperatures.

The liquid is usually stored and transported at a fairly low pressure.

Yeah, it wouldn't. The extra work to deal with low temperatures on a pipeline isn't worth it.

I would expect a mini-LNG plant to be able to run in someone's garage.

Looks good, but BC Ferries' recent shrinking of passenger compartments makes me a little sad.

Those minor ships replace the smaller ships with tiny cabins and open decks, so it's nice to see the car decks more enclosed.

Has this deal been signed, or can the NDP/Greens call it off?

If we're going to include discussion about this new class of Ferries, the title should be changed. Otherwise a new threat should be started.

Thoughts?

Agreed - "new BC Ferries" sounds good.

It was announced, so I expect it was signed.
It's also a contract that would have been signed by BC Ferries Corporation, not the Province.

Ah yes, the BC Liberal fiction that BC Ferries is somehow a private company.
