Wonderful post MTLskyline, a real treat to read through.

As for the look of the new phases, I dig it. It will fix that side of St-Antoine and add much needed life to the sector, which is very downtrodden. And though I wish they had integrated the dilapidated tenements on the south side of the street, I accept that their disappearance if it means we can have these towers, which will be more to scale in relation to the area, and will be great contributors to expanding the downtown south.

Noticed my separate thread for Phase III was deleted, so here are the preliminary phase III renders:

Apparently, most seemed in favor of the development itself, but neutral about the connection with the Bell Centre.

This session was only for the developer to present his project - the real consultation, when parties give their opinions/objections to the project will be on February 25th.

Edit: people have until February 20th to register to be able to present an opinion at the February 25th meeting...

Edit: SkahHigh and Franktko beat me to it.

This was the first OCPM meeting concerning this project. The developer, Cadillac Fairview and architect Aurèle Cardinal of IBI / CHBA presented the project to the 100 or so citizens in attendance. Citizens can make their opinions known at a meeting on February 25 (they must register by February 20 to be eligible).

An OCPM representative conceded that issues regarding height are controversial and Dinu Bumbaru of Heritage Montreal seemed concerned about the loss of the abandoned buildings currently on site (they were home to the black community's club scene in the 1910s and 20s).

Quote:

This is so pointless... Old or not, they're ABANDONED, and they have been for years.

The project will be approved. Citizens asked stupid questions. They cannot do anything to stop this from happening. The ''abandoned buildings''

I think they would be proud.

Thanks for the info. I had no idea about these black clubs, fascinating. THat being said, it was 100 years ago, and these buildings' function 100 years ago doesn't give them any special Privilege. Are we going to special heritage status to every single building that houses parties for ethnic minorities?

Wow, those are some quite beautiful towers! I wish we could get something like that in Ottawa (visiting from SSP Ottawa, although some of my photos of Montreal have been shared here).

I don't really like that surface parking lot. If they want to offer parking, underground is a better option, but surface parking lots aren't very attractive or safe feeling, and contribute to the Urban Heat Island effect due to all the asphalt. It could be used for greenspace or something else, I think.

As far as I can tell, this project includes no such exterior parking lot.

I believe he is talking about Jack's Parking, which isn't part of the project but will stand between the two towers.

Ah, I didn't see the name Jack's on that parking lot. Does it belong to a business?

Yes, the owner of that parking lot didn't want to sell his land.

It's now part of a bigger project, Quad Windsor.
