That's awesome! Hopefully I'll take a trip there with my parents next time I head out to Texas.

Methodist kicks off $50M expansion

Quote:
By Patrick Danner
October 8, 2012

Work starts today on a $50 million expansion of the Metropolitan Methodist Hospital in downtown San Antonio.

The expansion includes a seven-story, 85,000-square-foot Intensive Care Unit Tower that will accommodate 48 beds. The new structure also will house an operating-room recovery area and a gastrointestinal lab.

“The growth that's occurring both in downtown San Antonio and south of San Antonio has created the need for more beds,” said Greg Seiler, the hospital's new CEO. His hiring was announced last week.

Seiler expects that the recent closing of adult services at Christus Santa Rosa Health System's downtown hospital also will create more of a need for other hospitals in the area. Methodist Healthcare System started plans for the expansion before Christus announced its decision, however.

The Tobin Center is really moving along.

The expansion of Methodist is good! A bigger hospital means more jobs downtown.

The Department for Culture and Creative Development unveils the city’s largest public art project Saturday night — a sculpture located at the new Public Safety Headquarters at 315 South Santa Rosa Ave., in an area called Unity Plaza.

A monument to fallen police officers and firefighters, at night it’s lit with 2-mile-high beams of light that change from red to white to blue.

The monument looks awesome!

I can't get over the way the new DPS headquarters looks with a parking garage the exact same height...

Trader Joe's lures big crowd on first day

Quote:
By Neal Morton
Saturday,November 3, 2012

Outside San Antonio's first Trader Joe's, a steel drum player distracted shoppers as they waited to cross a parking lot filled with a sea of vehicles carrying committed fans and curious newcomers to the store Friday.

Off-duty police officers directed traffic into the grocer's small parking lot in the Quarry Village at 350 E. Basse Road. As the lunch rush approached, the winding checkout line inside the store paralleled the lengthening queue of drivers that extended from the clogged intersection of Jones Maltsberger and Basse roads to the nearby northbound exit lane on U.S. 281.

Even after 2 p.m., bumper-to-bumper traffic snaked its way along Basse Road between the highway and Broadway.

This might be the new shopping experience that the Quarry Market offers for months to come, said Kim Gatley, vice president of the commercial real estate firm NAI REOC San Antonio.

“I don't see this just being a one-weekend or one-week craze,” she said, noting new retailers routinely draw higher customer traffic.

“We expected a very strong opening from Trader Joe's, but it's not likely to trail off soon,” she said. “I think Trader Joe's has quite a following, and it will be a popular destination within that whole Alamo Quarry area for a long time.”

Amazon.com to open warehouse in Schertz

Quote:
By Valentino Lucio
Tuesday, November 6, 2012

SCHERTZ — After about six months of negotiations, the city of Schertz, the Schertz Economic Development Corp. and Guadalupe County have approved about $7.6 million in direct tax incentives to land a $166 million distribution warehouse for Amazon.com in Schertz.

The 1.26 million-square-foot warehouse, called a fulfillment center, will become the largest facility in the city and Guadalupe County, said Schertz EDC executive director David Gwin. It's expected that the project will create 350 new jobs that will generate about $11 million in annual payroll.

Exactly what jobs would pay was not disclosed, but Gwin said that the wage would exceed the minimum standards set by law.

Schertz's incentive package is a six-year property tax rebate worth nearly $4 million. The EDC approved a $500,000 cash incentive, which is a rebate on permitting fees.

The county also approved property tax abatement worth about $3.1 million, Gwin said. The county is not responsible for any cash payments, he added.

San Antonio Westside Multimodal Transit Center

Quote:
The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded a $15 million grant to VIA Metropolitan Transit to pay for the development of San Antonio’s first intermodal transportation hub.

VIA was awarded the funds under the capital grants section of the TIGER III Discretionary Grants Program. This grant will fund the development of the Westside Multimodal Transit Center in the Cattleman Square area.

“The Westside Multimodal Center is the hub of our mass transit future,” said City of San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro. “Because of this and other investments, people coming down the I-10 and State Highway 151 corridors will soon find it easier to get to downtown and on to their destinations in other parts of the city.”

The Westside Multimodal Transit Center (WMTC) will lay the groundwork for multimodalism in the San Antonio region and transform the central business district in the immediate vicinity. The facility will draw together several modes of transportation to increase mobility and encourage transit-oriented development, creating a bridge between downtown and the population of the West Side.

B-Cycle expands South Side reach

Quote:
By Mark D. Wilson
November 20, 2012

San Antonio's newest B-Cycle bike sharing stations opened Friday at six new locations around South San Antonio.

The new stations — located at Roosevelt Park, Concepcion Park, Mission Concepcion, Mission Road Street Connection, VFW River Trail Access and Mission San Jose — provide yet another way for residents and visitors to explore the ever-expanding Mission Reach and the San Antonio missions.

Mayor Julian Castro said San Antonio has a vibrant cycling community, and hopes to make the city the friendliest city for cyclists in the nation. “We want to create a fitness culture in the city so we have folks making the decision to be healthy,” he said. “We are very proud to be the first city in Texas to adopt this sort of bike share program.”

Bob Burns, a 17-year veteran of the cycling industry and CEO of B-Cycle said the company has locations in 14 cities nationwide. “Using a bike sharing system is easy,” he said.

Burns explained that bike sharing systems help bring bicycle infrastructure to life, and contributes to healthier and more environmentally beneficial lifestyles.

What if the city revived the 100 year old proposed Alamo Heroes Monument and built it in the center of the new park at Hemisfair. I think it would work but where at the park? Even more reason to take a ride to the top of the Tower of Americas.

Here is the link to the 812 foot Alamo Heroes monument. The Alamo deserves a bigger monument than the Cenotaph!
