Hmmmm, looks like most of the flights from the U.S. are going to stop first in Frankfurt. Might be some through flights, but some will involve changing planes.

Why does this airport remind me of a mid-century design? It looks like a modern version of an airport from the 1960's. An updated design concept of JFK's old terminal 6 or Copenhagen's terminal.

Frankfurt will always be Germanys biggest aviation hub due to it being the main base of Lufthansa. Nonstop service between Berlin-Brandenburg and Miami, New York, Los Angeles, and Newark has already been announced. Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, Washington, and Boston will probably follow within the next year or two. There will be far more nonstop options than are currently available through Berlin-Tegel.

Berlin is the birthplace of the International Style, as much as (or more than) Chicago. The architects are just being sensitive to local traditions.

Infrastructure design is mainly determined by its logistics. "Form follows function" is basically a German architecture mantra !

The BER is a midfield airport featuring two parallel runways with the terminal at the center. The whole concept involves a large train station under the terminal and makes the airport state of the art.

There will be only few airports on the globe combining as many intermodal access capacities in order to provide a comfortable travel experience.

I´d expect Chicago and Washington to be the new US connections to Berlin in the following 2 years....

I'm sure it will be very well connected to trains and subways, etc.. My point was just about the design of the terminal. It reminds me of a design from the 1960's, but much nicer and modern inside of course.

Well, the interior is what most travellers will remember, because the majority of time is spent there.

The exterior is not really 60s, its a functional design taking Bauhaus traditions in consideration and is comparable to the international style.

Absolutely. But one should keep in mind that airport development in European cities is a long term process.

I reckon MUC and BER are on par in the year 2020 handling around 45 Mio Pax each.

This looks like it will be a very cool airport. Is the train station a through station?

The 3 largest airlines (70% passenger market share) are enhancing the number of flights at BER in June 2012 !

Air Berlin raises the number of starts from 662 to 721 (plus 59) (+9%)
Lufthansa from 362 to 543 (plus 181) (+50%)
Easyjet from 256 to 267 (plus 11) (+4%)
The total increase of aircrafts movements is expected to be 10-12%
