What would you suggest they build instead, thousands of subdivisions? Perhaps, thousands of strip malls to house businesses and another 3 million shacks for homes?

13 super talls is a good start for Mumbai, but they need hundreds of them. Mumbai needs them.

Preach the need for skyscrapers to the millions of Mumbaians (60% of the city's inhabitants) living on landfill sites with raw sewage streaming past their cardboard huts.

Photos behind spoiler so as to try not to derail thread more than it already has been.

Skyscrapers are the most efficient way of housing these people. You still haven't suggested a better alternative. There are 13 million people living on 600 sq km, so I'm all ears as to what you'd prefer to see built.

How about a vast expanse of mid-rise (5-10 storeys) affordable housing geared toward the penurious? Do they not deserve to live somewhere where they are not surrounded by unutterable filth and disease, especially at a time when others in the city are erecting glitzy behemoths for the nouveau riche?
Skyscrapers are not conducive to affordability; surely you're not naive enough to think that all these "fabulous" Mumbai supertalls, all of which, I notice, are residential, are being built with these slum-dwellers in mind.

Regardless, back to the topic at hand.

Massey Tower by MOD Developments is going ahead with plans for 60 story multiuse and are retaining ERA to restore the CIBC building.

They just don't have that luxury. You're obviously not familiar with how scarce land is in that city. If Mumbai has any hope in hell of housing their people, they need to build exceedingly tall. In the developing world, high rises are the only sensible option for urban housing. Why do you think Sao Paulo looks like it does? Mumbai's population increases by 450,000 people every year. Your expanse of 5-10 storey proposals? Where are they going to build that, in the sea?

No, what they don't have the luxury to do is build expensive skyscrapers when 60% of the city's inhabitants live in slums. What do you propose to do with the poor? Sweep them across the river into the countryside to put up luxe highrises in their place?
Besides, now you're being disingenuous, conveniently changing the subject from Mumbai's planned and underway supertalls to Sao Paulo's scores and scores of 12-30-storey residentials. That is a better plan for a place teeming with so many poor.

Final Report on 88 Scott: http://www.toronto.ca/legdocs/mmis/2...file-44929.pdf

They've added office space to the podium and slightly altered the design. It will now be 204 metres to the mechanical roof.

Thanks for that information, Ramako. Too bad they tinkered with 88 Scott.

New rendering for 88 Scott.

Puke. This design went from bad to worse.

At 60 storeys, this should be over 200 metres.

After One Bloor there was a long drought, but now Toronto officially has over ten 200+ metre proposals:

--- QUICK LIST ---

(diagram)

1. Ten York (Toronto): 253.4m / 831ft
2. 45 Bay Street (Toronto): 244m / 801ft
3. 90 Harbour Residential I (Toronto): 239.5m / 786ft
3. 90 Harbour Residential II (Toronto): 239.5m / 786ft
5. 43 Simcoe (Toronto): 234.3m / 769ft
6. 156 Front (Toronto): 221.9m / 728ft
7. Eau de Soleil I (Toronto): 215.9m / 708ft
8. Massey Tower (Toronto): ~~~m / ~~~ft
9. 460 Yonge (Toronto): 207m / 679ft
10. 88 Scott (Toronto): 204m / 669ft
11. 100 Adelaide West (Toronto): ~~~m / ~~~ft

--- RENDERS ---

1. Ten York (Toronto): 253.4m / 831ft

2. 45 Bay Street (Toronto): 244m / 801ft

The Latest: In October 2010, SSP editor WhipperSnapper wrote, "I overheard something in regards to 45 Bay but I have no idea what it means. It covers the site being sold to the tower as we know it going ahead soon. In any case, there is movement behind the curtains. 45 Bay is minimum a year and a half away even what I heard (some specs but mostly big money numbers being tossed around) implies the building is a go. Looking back at what I heard, another possible outcome is the site will be developed in phases with the first phase being the parking to take advantage of the nearby ACC." Shortly thereafter UT member Batman wrote, "The base of 45 Bay will be the home of Toronto's new Coach Terminal."

3. 90 Harbour Residential I (Toronto): 239.5m / 786ft

3. 90 Harbour Residential II (Toronto): 239.5m / 786ft

5. 43 Simcoe (Toronto): 234.3m / 769ft

Note: On the left.

6. 156 Front (Toronto): 221.9m / 728ft

Note: On the right.

7. Eau de Soleil I (Toronto): 215.9m / 708ft

Note: On the left.

8. Massey Tower (Toronto): ~~~m / ~~~ft

9. 460 Yonge (Toronto): 207m / 679ft

10. 88 Scott Street (Toronto): 204m / 669ft

11. 100 Adelaide West (Toronto): ~~~m / ~~~ft
