Among the extraordinary new crop of New York's super-slim, ultra-luxury residential towers surveyed in The Skyscraper Museum's exhibition SKY HIGH & the logic of luxury, the most slender of all is the 111 W. 57th St., designed by SHoP Architects, with structural engineering by WSP Group for JDS Development Group and Property Markets Group.

With a ratio of the width of the base to height of 1:23, the 1,350+ ft tower will be the most slender building in the world.

SHoP's design harkens back to the quality, materiality, and emphatic verticality of historic NYC skyscrapers, while utilizing advanced engineering and technology to craft a contemporary contribution to the skyline. The tower's silhouette rises in an elegant series of feathered setbacks, while the façade reads at multiple scales and vantage points. An intricate pattern of shaped terracotta panels and bronze latticework on the east and west façades creates a sweeping play of light and shadow, while a glass curtain wall on the north and south façades provide sweeping views of Central Park and Midtown.

Setting that world record will make this building even more of an icon. I consider myself very lucky to be alive to watch such a crazy time for the New York skyline. When people mention things like ESB, the Chrysler building etc they will also be mentioning 111 w57, although it might need a catchier name, idk.

I couldn't imagine something so thin going past 1,350 feet... even anywhere close to that this thing looks like a toothpick, but it's a great building regardless, can't wait to see it in real life

One57 was at one time Carnegie57. In time 111 W. 57th may come up with a more marketable name, or it may remain just what it is. It is being incorporated into Steinway Hall, so that may play a part in whatever the building is called.

well, steinway tower is much better than my idea of a name. because of how the tower is so slender and has setbacks, i was thinking of 'the fagot' because it looks like a bundle of lolly sticks, each shorter than the next. Yeah, I prefer Steinway...

The talk tonight at the skyscraper museum was really interesting. Some incredible new renderings, especially of the crown and the facade.

It was mentioned in passing that the tower was "right at about 1400 feet."

Unfortunately my phone died (of course), but the talk will be posted on the museum's website within the week. Maybe someone else grabbed some pictures.
