This seems to be what they've used on the 'pedestrian' underpass for TGH at Sobey's Square. This one runs under the off-ramp to Topsail Rd. They'll need to do something for the TGH and the on-ramp from Topsail Rd, but there's still no sign of any other work in that area (other than the Topsail Rd overpass).

Interesting.

Still researching why they are not used more for roads here.

Seems there are several pre-cast examples on the web for quick cut & fill underpasses.

Had a conversation with the manager of Liquid Assets at the Halifax airport while waiting for a connection. Apparently, they are seriously looking at opening a location in YYT after the renovations/expansion is completed.

Some changes coming to traffic flow at the bottom of signal hill (as a pilot project). Looks like a much needed improvement in my opinion.

So Cooks hill becomes a super-shortcut. One way on Cooks hill needs to be opposite direction.

Think of it more like a duty-free store. It'll be in the departures lounge, so it's not like you could just shop there everyday as an alternative to NLC.

So, as it's now September and we have but 2 months left in the construction season, here's an update on TGH work this year.

No work north of Kenmount Rd.
Conduit work for street lighting proceeding, conduit in place from near-Kenmount to almost Redmond's Road, and then a little past Redmond's Rd, but not as far as Blackmarsh. Now that the two bypasses have been removed, they can finish the conduit install this year.

Bypasss at Old Pennywell Rd still in place, over/underpass still unfinished ( roadbed on Old Pennywell rd needs to be raised at least 3 Metres. Only work showing this year is a couple loads of boulders dumped at the east side of the under/overpass.

Bypass at Redmond's Rd removed a few days ago. Redmond's Rd is gravel and you now drive onto the concrete bridge-deck (which hasn't been paved). It's a rough road.

Blackmarsh Rd bypass removed this week, now drive onto the fully finished over/underpass which has a nice paved deck. The electrical conduit hasn't reached this area yet.

Sobey's Square area - they've piled up the material removed from the Blackmarsh Rd bypass along the west side of the off-ramp to Topsail Rd, presumably as a sound barrier.

The pedestrian underpass has been partially finished, see previous post. No sign of any work for the over/under pass needed for access to TGH from Topsail road.

Topsail Rd overpass work proceeding - north side pad almost complete, south side pad footing excavation started.

Anyone who thinks we'll be driving on any part of this road this year is dreaming.

This year? At this pace it'll be more like 2 more years before we're driving on any portion of the TGH currently "under construction".

The supposed plan to get construction going from the provincial government is obviously not working out. Nice theory - announce tenders in winter, award in spring, work go ahead in summer. The level of foot dragging between the government and then contractors here is off the charts. With our short construction season, a 3 month delay from the awarding of the tender and ANY visible work is unacceptable. Evidently in order to get anything done here a tender for construction needs to be sent out for bids in Sept. for any hope of actual progress in the next years construction season.

Since there's no chance of any paving this year perhaps the govt. will take the time to research the Federal government paving standards (think Terra Nova Park) and apply those to any work to proceed on the TGH. I'm no civil engineer, but there IS a difference. At least it'll last then - unlike other provincial highways. Sorry for long post - had to vent!

I'd say Mr. Hawkins knew full well no one would drive on it this year, but it was a great political sound bite!

EDIT: Maybe he meant we'd get to drive on the new Blackmarsh bridge ;-)

Pages 72-73 of next weeks council agenda give some insight to the future road alignment of Commonwealth and TGH. It's likely just conceptual at this point and probably not finalized.

I'm going to guess that my 2 year old will have her license before this is done...

Sucks for the people who own those two homes there. They've been in that area for a long, long time.

Which two houses? The one in the middle with the double driveway has been torn down for some time, with only the driveways still there.

Google Maps were upgraded today with VERY recent satellite images( Aug 14, 2017 ) - shows all the tower cranes in town and latest construction sites. Take a look at the Soldier's Pond electrical site, massive !
