The Peace Tower has and probably always will have it's protected sight lines. The city has been quite smart by limiting heights in key areas and the blocks closest to Parliament Hill. I don't think the hill is in ANY jeopardy of being 'overshadowed' by 'massive' developments over 125 feet anywhere nearby. To say that an enormous swath of the CBD and beyond should be limited to 125 feet when real estate is already at a premium is extremely illogical and ridiculous.

That's going to be quite an impressive of amount of retail in the sector between Terry Fox and Huntmar (E to W) and between Campeau and Hazeldean (N to S) and surroundings.

Re: Dundas

Those articles have a partial list. They do plan to open a Nike Factory Store, but haven't heard about Adidas or Puma

Adidas will be one of the tenants. Many more will be officially announced soon. Puma is still not confirmed.

I think there is a sign on site that you can see from the 417 about Nike being proposed. Adidas would be a great fit but for some sport stores in the west end, they won't be too thrilled. I picked up some soccer cleats this summer in NH @ an outlet store and they have been a good deal. Both Nike and Adidas don't tend to have the speciality items at these outlet stores but the prices are generally good if they have what you want. Outlet stores are not what they used to be...which was factory seconds, slightly imperfect items and last years clearance stuff. Now most of them sell lesser quality but name brand apparel.

Now if only there was an artisinal olive oil shop being proposed there.

That's going to be quite an impressive amount of auto-dependent retail sprawl.

Yep that is some long history of genius planning in Kanata for many years. Genius planning that keeps on continuing.

Anyways, they better stop having Sens games at 2 PM's on Saturdays. Even with the new lanes on the 417, traffic will be atrocious if there are Sens games during peak shopping periods. One can imagine during the Holidays as well.

Once all those stores open, not only all 96's should extend to serve the Campeau extension to CTC, but they better increase the number of 96's during off-peak which by the way were reduced from every 12 to every 15 on weekdays and from every 10 to every 15 on Saturdays (mostly due to having more articulated buses on that route, though I still see some 96's served by 40 footers). 10 minutes on middays and Sundays and every 7/8 minutes should be the ideal frequencies. Ever since Jim Watson was elected, there has been a constant deterioration not just in local routes but also in major routes. Transit in Kanata for example is a disaster, except the random area in the Katimavik/Eagleson area that gets all the 96's. Otherwise it is faster to bike (or probably even walk) throughout Kanata.

The almost complete lack of transit to anywhere in Kanata west of Terry Fox Drive is a serious issue that better be rectified soon with all this development. Currently the Tanger site has no transit at all. I suppose there is the 96A across the highway, but that's rather far away, and most importantly it only comes every 30 minutes and is therefore next-to-useless.

Frequencies are a serious issue right now, unless you're taking the Transitway at peak periods they're atrocious. What we need is a "10 minutes or better all day" service guarantee on all transitway routes (except perhaps the 93, at least until the Kanata North BRT opens), and on the major local routes (1, 12, 85, 118, maybe a few others).

How about we replace the buses on low-volume suburban local routes with minibuses. The operational savings can be invested in building this 10-minute frequency network. The LRT savings after 2018 can also be invested in this.

Honestly, I think 15 minutes is acceptable for off-peak service on the 96 (based on ridership patterns west of Eagleson), and should be the frequency at pretty much all off-peak periods - BUT, what I would have done differently is extended most 93s downtown, having both routes running together (6 trips an hour) between Eagleson and Queensway since there is definitely overcrowding there (someone travelling from Bayshore could take either the 93 or 96 downtown). That would have created more direct-to-downtown service from Kanata North, especially useful for shift employees during the daytime and evenings. A possible pattern for the 93:

* Peak periods, peak direction - Only runs between Eagleson and Innovation (can transfer to 96 or express routes or take the 60)

* Peak periods, off-peak direction - LeBreton to Innovation (as it is now), due to overcrowding on Albert/Slater

* Midday, early evening and daytime on weekends, plus (if warranted) during third shifts - Hurdman to Innovation (supplements the 96)

* Least used periods - Eagleson to Innovation (transfer to 96 at Eagleson)

Some of the cost of the extension would be offset by paring it back to Eagleson (from Lincoln Fields) during peak periods and at times of lower use.

As for crossing Kanata by transit, forget it. There isn't even a good focal point, and it requires three buses in many cases to go from Kanata North to parts of Kanata South. The only solution is to time the transfers at Eagleson, since Terry Fox has turned out to be a write-off. The 168 should be straightened in Kanata Lakes (perhaps running from Eagleson to Campeau and CTC, bypassing Terry Fox) and the southern (Katimavik) part of the loop removed, since it just duplicates the 96.

If all 96 trips are extended to CTC, that would leave a service hole somewhere else. The only all-day service between Eagleson and Huntmar in central Kanata would be the 118, and there would be no service along Hazeldean west of Terry Fox or along Castlefrank. The current 96A/96C pattern is probably the best possible one, although evening and weekend service would need to be extended westward.

Putting the 161 back to a black route (from the current quasi-red route) would solve the issue for Castlefrank (though via the loopy Pickford segment - though it can go through Castlefrank instead of Pickford) since the 164 is not that far away on Eagleson and not a really excessive distance from Katimavik for the 96). The 96 use to run mostly every 30 (some periods at 60) minutes anyways on Castlefrank south of Katimavik.

Even with all the 96's passing through the Campeau area. Half of the 96's would still continue to Stittsville (15-20 mins at most off-peak during the day - I still prefer the 10 min frequency for the entire route) (though would prefer to see them all via the Main street - not sure if the other segment to Stittsville is that useful, since it only serves the far east part only).. Meanwhile the area between Terry Fox and Huntmar there is a whole lot of stores and Lowe's is not necessairly a big producer of transit traffic. And besides with the development already well under-way in Fernbank, there will likely be a new local route created in a year or two (at the time all the stores on Campeau will open), which can be used for the segment of Hazeldean between the 96 and the 118.

Also since the start of the year, there is a new local route for the Arcadia (Huntmar at Campeau) community beside the future Tanger and Bass Pro (though only 2 AM trips and 3 PM trips)

Interesting idea for interlining 96 & 93 service--very practical and probably close to revenue-neutral.

I like the idea of removing the southern half of the 168. My variant of this suggestion would be to keep the northern half only, and make it bidirectional. That way, people transferring to the 96 could take the bus in either direction (to Terry Fox or Eagleson) whichever comes first, effectively doubling service frequency. It would be completely revenue-neutral.

After the Confederation Line opens, the city will merge local & express routes in Orleans to create a network of local routes terminating at Blair. The redesign would be easy as Orleans' black & green routes have almost the exact same paths.

After Phase 2 I presume the city will do the same thing for Kanata with routes converging on Bayshore. However in Kanata-Stittsville a complete redesign of the local route network would be necessary, as the blacks & greens follow very different paths, especially in Kanata South. Hopefully all our of suggestions will get implemented then! (Ideally before then, though. 2023 is a long way away).

The problem with interlining the 93 & 96 is that due to the terrible pedestrian facilities at the Eagleson overpass, the 93 only services Eagleson station eastbound.

Some sort of pedestrian bridge is required across the highway to allow for a connection to Eagleson from north of the highway. Hopefully one will get built as part of the future transitway corridor that will run north of the 417. This would allow the 93 to serve Eagleson in both directions.

I see the campaign to destroy-and-render-useless Jockvale continues apace.

I'm a little confused by this one:

http://webcast.ottawa.ca/plan/All_Im...e%20Change.PDF

They're basically chopping up the street grid to both remove streets and to cut off continuity, while introducing slight squiggles here and there. Uhuniau will love it.

But then when you look at the area in Google Earth, they've already partially done "on the ground" what they propose to do in the OP amendment. Indeed, looking through Google Earth's imagery history, this plan was already done-in back in 2004 when the Home Depot and the strip mall to its east were built, both of which were built right over prospective roads. Compared to the plan, they even got the strip mall access drive from Strandherd in the wrong place way back then. I mean wtf? Just what is the point of the CDPs if they're not actually going to control anything?

Another thing they're proposing to do is "down zone" quite a bit of the area.

Finally, and this was already an issue, there's a distinct lack of creativity when it comes to land use adjacent that linear stormwater pond on the west side. I mean hell, how often in Ottawa do we get a chance to duplicate a Dutch canal environment? Well not often, but here is one... and it's going to be more of the same probably next-to-unused greenspace. They could have had a split street straddling the pond with

Every time I look at anything to do with Barrhaven I get pissed off. They keep doing everything wrong and even when they get something vaguely right in the planning stage they go and change it to get it wrong.
