HAHA, a Marchand dive leads to a Caps goal (to tie the game) in a elimination game.

And holy smokes, Boston diving all over the place.

Thomas has been brutal. Look for a Semin goal from his own blue line. Again.

Well, not allowing a shot in OT is a good way to make sure it doesn't squeak by Thomas.

Nice goal by Seguin.

Brutal play from Wideman.... Backstrom shouldn't have made that "pass" either.

Typical Washington choking hard when it matters. Only Ovechkin and Holtby (and on some occasions Semin and Backstrom) are doing something in this series.

Nice win by the Kings. Shocking it took so long with all the chances in OT that they bumbled.

^^Yeah, it should have been over in the first minute, but I'm glad they got the win and finished the series.

Wow, how long has it been since the President's Trophy winners got knocked out in the first round?

Oh wait, never mind. About 10 minutes.

Detroit Red Wings by the Edmonton Oilers in 2006 before that.

Someone else started the comparison between this year's Kings and the 03-04 Flames. That year, the Flames were 6th against Vancouver's 3rd, but it was still a stunning upset to most. They had a handful of skilled players, an incredible, unbelievable goaltender, and a bunch of 3rd/4th line grinders, with D. Sutter coaching them well beyond their abilities. And in 04, a former Oiler named Martin Gelinas became an unexpected overnight hero with his game winning goals. In 2012, it's another former Oiler named Stoll.

Incidentally, it's amusing to look at who's been eliminated. Pittsburgh, Detroit, Vancouver, San Jose - all teams who have recently either won the cup, made it to the final, or had a lot of deep playoff runs. I got bored and took a look at something - with things going the way they are, Chicago, Jersey, Boston, and the Rangers might drop out this week. Which means that out of the 8 teams left in the 2nd round, you have to go back to 1975 (Philly) to see the last time any of them won the cup.

I love underdogs and upsets, and I love new blood in the playoffs. This has been hands down the best so far in probably 20 years from my perspective.

So I had the game on my PVR. Watched the awesome ending, and a bit of the CBC commentary... then paused it and wandered away. There didn't seem to be anything else happening when I got back so I just skipped ahead to live TV, and the National was on.

I shit you not, I came back just as they were showing riot footage. I nearly pissed myself laughing.

Then they announced it was footage from Montreal from Friday.

Oh well, still funny as all hell.

Washington Capitals in 2010... 121 pts during the regular season and this happens.

Video Link

Funny fact: The 2006 Red Wings with 124 pts and the 2010 Capitals with 121 pts are the two best post-lockout teams and they were both out after the first round.

BTW-The 33 pts difference between the Caps and the Habs that year arguably makes it the greatest upset post-lockout (29 pts difference between the Wings-Oilers in 2006).

Yeah, so this doesn't seem to be that big of a phenomena for the president's trophy winners to lose in the first round.

LA was the better team, no questions asked.

And in all honesty, even leading up to the playoffs the hockey spirit in metro Vancouver was incredibly weak. A lot of people are still angry and dismayed over the idiotic riots last year.

Oh, and the riot jokes are getting very old, you guys should come up with some new material.

If not, be sure to lambast London Ontario every St. Patrick's Day from now on as well.

Don't worry, we're filling the annual "St. Patrick's Day" forum threads with jokes about it.

The Canucks are still pretty young, and with the Sedins style of play, they should be able to perform at a high level well into their thirties. I'm hoping Gillis is looking at Schneider as our new goalie of the future if we are to achieve our ultimate goal. How do we trade Luongo though, and his huge contract, or maybe Luongo wouldn't mind being a back up in Vancouver, as strange as that sounds.

Well, at least I can relax now.

The riot thing is getting really, really old now. You guys aren't getting a rise out of anybody, it's just really dumb at this point. That being said, I'll remind Albertan's that Edmonton has had a hockey riot, and, of all things, a riot on Canada Day. What's even worse is Calgary's riot at a fake wrestling match (stampede wrestling). But of course those riots don't count...
