It has officially topped out and

Tishman Speyer is now aiming to have the tower ready for occupancy, and its first move-ins, by the end of this year followed by the adjacent mid-rise buildings and overall development of 392 units on Transbay Block 1.

Probably in the minority here, but I love it.

A box with a twist.

I don't think you are in the minority. Most of us like the overall form of it with some quibbles:

(1) the design might have been significantly more impressive were it taller. This isn't just a question of skyscraper lovers wanting everything taller. This particular form looks better the more twists it can have. But originally the city wanted to limit it to 300 ft and relented by letting it go to 400. We are greatful for small favors.

(2) there's some question about the quality of the materials. I haven't yet been able to see it up close and in person so I can't comment but others have expressed disappointment.

I don't want to say much more than this - I have a bit of inside knowledge on the construction of this building from my work. I will not disclose on this forum which area I have expertise on. BUT...

I can assure anyone that the materials, which I assume you are referring to the facade, is world class and made to last. A lot of careful details went into how the facade performs and looks.

This is speculation (not my area) - but the original design with the white painted wood probably would have been more expensive and a liability down the road. If you were going to do wood on the exterior, you would likely need materials behind it that won't decay over time like steel/aluminum anyway. I've seen others suggest some sort of concrete mold - possible, but also brittle and prone to chip etc. This facade is fully (painted) aluminum.

EDIT: I see that originally the exterior was actually supposed to be masonry tiles - could be several reasons why they went with aluminum instead. Probably cost.

Yeah that's a hallmark of studio gang's work which they seem to pull off effortlessly intentional or not. See Chicago's Aqua, looks amazing from street level but from afar it's... a box. I find it tiresome that they're still doing the rippling facade gimmick in 2019, get some new material already.

The facade is disappointing and looks cheap anyway. It's literally just white panels, how is this world class?

Yeah, this is a great tower. The effect would certainly be better if the tower was perhaps 200 feet taller, but I love it!

Given how long it takes to get a project like this approved in San Francisco, the design is now probably 5-10 years old (the first renderings showing it in this thread date from 2014). And they fought over the height of this one for a while. So it's hardly something Gang is "doing in 2019". But I do think it would have looked nicer with the originally proposed tiles.

those are nice shots!

from close up this definitely has the desired visual effect. more subtle from a distance. I like seeing how it fits in from the Embarcadero side.

just adding one more angle, from Park Tower entranceway on Howard

Of course! I always appreciate it the thank yous. I'm probably coming back up to the city on July 1st for the Salesforce Transit Center re-opening. I'll have that thread updated as well!

It was fabulous - I took hundreds of photos - would make a good panorama if I had the time to stitch them together. I was surprised how dirty the windows were!
