Bummer... I don't have really high hopes for this guy either and now he owns a prime piece of property along the water in Windsor.

I'm trying to be cautiously optimistic about Farhi. With our economy slowly gaining momentum, he may be in a good position to start building. The property he owns here is in a great location with tonnes of potential. I guess time will tell.

Those damn banners he has plastered all over downtown London actually violate the city's sign bylaw but they just look the other way because he's King Farhi.

My condo that I live in is finally getting painted this year, with new windows to come after that. It is such a great building, but looks horrible from the outside. It's at 540 Ouellette. You know the one next to the 500 Oullette office building, it has those horrible streaks all over the windows. I'm just happy that once done, it will be one more eyesore gone from our downtown.

Oh rly? I know the 500 building, but I'm trying to think of your building, guess I'll hop on Google street view to jog my memory.

Is it that art deco building next to the 500 building (farther from the river)? Where hungry howie's used to be?

Yes, exactly. We bought our condo there about 2 years ago, and they've been fixing it up gradually. Our unit is one of only two in the building that have large open air terraces, facing east and north towards the river, we have a great urban view for living in Windsor. I'm just happy that it's one more improvement happening in our downtown.

It's being painted in grey shades, with dark grey and dark blue windows, not mirrored like now, it should look really nice when it's done. The windows are suppossed to go in this year, but I'm doubtful we'll get them till the spring. The painting was supposed to start this week, but it's been raining almost every day.

So if you live there next year you'll be able to see them work on the new Tunnel plaza. I think it's supposed to start next year.

How can we get the Windsor diagram updated to include the new hotel tower for Caesar's Windsor? The tower has been completed for quite some time now, but is not yet included in the city's diagram.

I'm currently updating some buildings for London's diagram, but if you guys can't find someone to draw the new Caesar's I might be able to help out at some point.

Took a quick look at the Windsor diagram and it looks like the one casino tower is out of scale. The roof height is apparently 83m but the drawing is almost 100m. The new tower is around 110m, right?

Awesome bolognium! If I had the skills to do such a drawing myself I would try it. You're right about the older caesar's tower, it is out of scale.

The old tower it is out of scale.

This link here has the heights.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...ndsor,_Ontario

It states the old tower is 21 stories and 110m and the new tower is 27 stories and 111m.

I didn't think the spire was that tall?

The new tower is 27 stories upon a podium, which I think is close to 8 or 10 stories itself.

Airport Lands

The Future of Windsor Airport Lands outlined by the city's master plan.

Couresey of http://windsorite.ca/2011/11/the-fut...y-master-plan/

Quote:
Three years after the City of Windsor took over operations at Windsor Airport and established “Your Quick Gateway”, a master plan for future land use at the airport has been prepared and will go to council for approval next Monday.

The goal of the master plan is to ensure cost-effective development of the 813 hectare site through the year 2031. The plan makes note that Windsor is located within an 8-hour drive from half of North America’s population and expands on how we could be a strategic location for future industry.

The master plan indicates that the Windsor International Airport has the “potential to become Ontario’s primary western business gateway and a major multi-modal hub”.

Plans for future use at the airport include:

250 hectares of land for a business park
expanded cargo facilities
a new terminal located between the airport’s runways
an extension of the main runway to 10,000 feet
a new taxiway north of the main runway to accommodate future business park needs
plans to accommodate Boeing 747-400 cargo jets
plans for a new control tower closer to Walker Road
reconfiguration of the passenger terminal to meet passenger growth trends
creation of a dedicated de-icing facility
establishment of a bulk aircraft fuel storage facility
The Airport Master Plan goes to Council next Monday for acceptance.

I cruised through downtown last night with my fiancee and saw the Capital all lit up for the Windsor International Film Fest. Lots of people coming out of the Capital. It was great. I love seeing that theater all lit up and lively.

I also noticed that once past Wyandotte, for a few blocks going towards Tecumseh it's pretty dead and abandoned looking.

We also took a drive out under the expressway on Howard so see some of the new landscaping being completed there.

I saw some photos of it, so we had to go and take a drive by at night. Only 1 side was completely finished and lit up, the other side was still unfinsihed. It looked pretty cool though, and it definately gave the road and underpass some new life.

Here are the origional pics from http://www.windsorite.ca

Mayor Eddie Francis is in the news talking about how he feels progress on the University bringing a satellite campus into the downtown armouries is moving too slow.

I'm going to bold the part that I thought was interesting.

http://www.windsorstar.com/Francis+w...404/story.html
Quote:
WINDSOR, Ont. -- With a frustrated Mayor Eddie Francis accusing the University of Windsor of dragging its feet on construction of its proposed downtown campus sites, the school’s President Alan Wildeman is advising patience for projects worth the wait.

Francis, reacting to a story in the Star Tuesday about the university’s plans to bring cutting edge art programs to the new Armories campus when it opens, said he would like to “see more action and less talk and dreams” from the university.

“Am I satisfied? No I’m not,” said Francis Tuesday. “I’ve expressed to the university that I’d like to see things moving more quickly, go from talking to executing ... It’s been a year since we made the armories accessible.”

Francis said he is convinced that private enterprise would have taken advantage of the city property much sooner and there would be some action evident on site. He said that location coupled with the university’s proposed redevelopment of the Windsor Star building are integral to the future strategy of planning the downtown core.

He suggested the slow pace could prove a detriment to other future downtown developments, including “a couple” of possible projects he expects to be officially announced within weeks.

“I keep being told there’s a process to be followed,” said the mayor. “Maybe, that’s the way the universities operate. But I look at it from the city’s perspective and we’d like to see shovels in the ground ... The other projects aren’t linked to the university but they are all pieces of the our strategic plan. Council is heading into budget sessions and will have questions. I’d like to have some answers.”

But Wildeman replied that much progress has been made.

“I guess I’d say we’ve worked hard and accomplished a lot the past five months,” said Wildeman. “We have architects engaged designing buildings and we’ve announced a new academic unit for the armories. This is a great opportunity for students in the long term.”

However, Wildeman cautioned that mobilizing the movement of entire faculties, thousands of staff and students and creating new programs with upgraded equipment is not something that happens over night.

Nevertheless, he added, that he has been involved in other building projects at other post secondary institutions and, comparatively speaking, the work is progressing more quickly in this instance.

“We want to make sure we get it right,” said Wildeman. “We can’t be compared with the private sector. We can’t put a date on shovels in the ground.”

He said the university is committed to the armory and is working to finalize its review of the Star building.

He added he has reviewed the proposed architectural designs and has been “blow away” by them. “The city will be proud of its downtown.”
