Unbeknownst to most Down Under, we actually have a Melbourne here in Quebec.

The accent between Quebec and France is different of course, but this still comes pretty close to how we'd say Melbourne in French:

Je parle français. Ça me surprendrait si j'arrivais à avoir le bon accent du premier coup, mais je comprends ce que c'est que de devoir prononcer une langue qui est différente de la mienne et, du coup, j'ai développé le réflexe de demander comment à mon interlocuteur

Exactement!

Montréal sounds good in French (I won't spell it out phonetically though.)

It sounds pretty good the way Anglo-Canadians say it: "munn-tree-yall".

But I don't like how Americans say it: "mawn-tree-yall".

we really don’t know what we are doimg with our Rs in the u.s., at least on the coastal fringe from new orleans to maine.
