LOS ANGELES | 333 S. Figueroa Street | 1,108 FT | 77 FLOORS (New Tallest)

Proposed 77-Story Tower Would Be L.A.'s Tallest Building

Quote:
Last year, the Wilshire Grand claimed the title of the West Coast's tallest building, with a slender spire that peaks 1,100 feet above Downtown Los Angeles. But a newly proposed tower just up the street seems to be gunning for its crown at the highest tower west of the Mississippi River.

Last week, Chinese developer Shenzhen New World Group filed plans with the City of Los Angeles to redevelop the 1980s L.A. Grand Hotel Downtown at 333 S. Figueroa Street on Bunker Hill. In addition to converting the existing 13-story hotel into 224 apartments, the proposed development also calls for the construction of a soaring 77-story tower which would rise to an apex nearly 1,108 feet above ground level.

Los Angeles-based Dimarzio | Kato architecture is designing the L.A. Grand redevelopment, would contain a total of 599 hotel rooms, 242 condominiums, 28,705 square feet of commercial space, and 36,674 square feet of hotel amenities - including a bar occupying its top two floors. Renderings portray a slim glass-and-steel structure, rising above 552 parking spaces on seven basement levels. Plans also call for a series of gardens, event terraces, and swimming pools.

The project would replace the existing hotel's event and conference center, but allow an existing boarding high school to remain in place.

New World Group entered the Southern California scene in 2010 with its $60-million purchase the L.A. Grand Hotel, and followed with its purchase of the Sheraton Universal Hotel near Universal Studios in 2011. Both properties are now slated for redevelopment.

Odds? I mean, what are the odds that this will actually get built?

A Chinese developer suggests the chances are good it will get built as they don't usually propose anything outside of China that won't be. On the other hand, none of that's a guarantee of anything, of course.

Let the Chinafication of Los Angeles begin!

Seriously though Chinese investment in your region is hella important to the future of your city. Just ask Vancouver. It's entire skyline is built almost exclusively through off-shore Chinese investors who initially wanted a exit-strategy when Hong Kong reverted to Mainland control and then wave of wealthy business immigrants who wanted a better quality of life. And now investment firms and speculative investors... I personally think the bubble will burst but until then it's still full steam ahead and upwards...

As for this design? Spectacular and I hope we see dozens of similar projects across So Cal soon!

LA already had a solid supertall before the Wilshire grand, with the US Bank Building/Library Tower. Now a real new tallest ? then yes.

Very nice design and good to see that block intensify. Is this the start a height war with Angel's Landing?

I'm hoping this is the first of many. Investment in LA is a good thing. I don't care if its international, more investment = happy Chris.

So long as the investment continues, the people benefit, the economy benefits, I think we can all cheers to that.

I agree, One Wilshire should be listed as 934 feet tall not 1100

God I hope so. Something similar to the Empire State and Chrysler buildings.

I like the height. The design needs work, especially if it will be the tallest in LA.

Reminds me of this older proposal in Queens...

I actually like the design as it takes the angles from the original building and flips them sideways and puts them up on the crown. Nice little call back and the V design looks great going up the sides.

This tower will look mighty fine from Griffith Park, Los Feliz, Silver Lake, and Echo Park area since the "V sides" will be distinguishable from these neighborhoods.

Is there a timeline for this project yet or can anyone guess when this bad boy will break ground?
