Semantics aside, the first footings were poured in the last few days.

Facing south towards Kingston hotel. Still excavating.

Facing west, looking at former Whitespot site.

Facing east, looking at intersection of Georgia St and Richards St. You can see pit dug likely for office tower base, but they haven't started rebar or poured it.

Close-up facing east, you can see they poured a small footing for the wall and the rebar that extends upward from the footing.

It's really quite simple.
Unfortunately, the definition varies across the site. In the Edmonton forum for example, if excavation is underway for the construction of the foundation, it is considered under construction. There might be a good discussion to be had in a more general forum (B&A, Engineering) about this issue.

Looking west from Richards St at former Whitespot location @ Georgia and Seymour.

Some excavation now complete on the residential site, Richards at Robson.

Nice view for Kingston hotel guests of the residential site.

That's one small crane (for now). I can barely see it from our apartment.

Some exciting crane action!

The pit where they will make the massive concrete and rebar base to the office tower is taking shape.

I walked by today and it is SO noisy there at the moment. I am surprised Hotel Kingston's reviews are not that bad, although everyone does mention the construction going on. Must be hellish to stay there right now!

It is so stupid they didn't buy the whole property and re-build the whole block.

What makes you think they didn't try to buy it but that the owners weren't interested? It would've made the project a lot easier to construct.

I am sure they did try, but I guess they just didn't go for an offer impossible to resist.

Kingston Hotel owner speaks about buy-out offers in this Canada.com news article

...O'Hagan, who's been running the 52-room hotel for 20 years and whose son, Sean, 29, works the desk, said he's had calls from a number of real-estate agents.

"You never know who they're working for," [owner Fred O'Hagan] said. "They would say they were interested and we would say, OK, bring us an offer. But we've never had a formal offer from Telus. Nobody ever made me an offer."

Asked if he would sell now, "It's all hypothetical. I think it's too late now."

He pointed out he supported Telus at a city meeting and noted the contractors have been accommodating.

"Our neon sign is almost historic and they [workers] accidentally broke a couple of the bulbs and they said they'd fix them," he said...

I don't know, it sounds hard to believe.

I'm thinking it probably went down something like this ...

Telus Office Tower. Kingston Hotel north wall on left.

Looking at former Whitespot site. Previously mentioned newly added second crane is visible.

Thanks for the updates.

It looks like they are motoring full steam ahead, at least on the office tower portion.
