Assuming we are speaking about mid-century, then no doubt Palm Springs, and in distant second, the western coastal/hillside flank of LA (scattered in/around Malibu, Pacific Palisades, Brentwood, Santa Monica, Mar Vista, Beverly Hills, Hollywood Hills, Silverlake etc.). For more contemporary, Venice and the areas around the High Line/Meatpacking/Chelsea take the cake for me, at least as far as the design/quality ratio goes.

I paid a visit to Denver about 3 weeks ago. Cute city, with TONS of contemporary infill - of varying degrees of quality - seemingly under-construction or recently completed throughout the entire city. A big surprise in that regard.

I was curious about the Palm Springs thing so I started looking around on Google street view.

This scene here is almost good enough to be in a city promotional brochure:

Right across the street:

Another good one for a promotional brochure:

Some middlebrow stuff:

Gold course stuff:

I wonder if this was an older one that got totally renovated:

^ Yeah, Venice is #1 in terms of quality contemporary and lots of it. Overall, southern California seems to favor contemporary vs. other regions.

But most of the booming cities these days in are seeing a lot of contemporary single family - Austin, Seattle, Denver, Atlanta, Houston etc.

You don't see much contemporary in the midwest or northeast - there's just not a lot of tear downs/single family infill in older neighborhoods in those regions, which is where you find most of the contemporary stuff being built in the south and west.

Well, the original question, I think, was more about actual mid-century stuff rather than new stuff, in which case the Midwest and Northeast should, at least in theory, have lots of stuff.

I was just looking around in Google street view at the Chicago area looking to see if I could find some neighborhoods with a lot of Prairie style houses (after all that's where Frank Lloyd Wright had his base, right?), but so far haven't really found much.

I would say the opposite is generally true. You generally see more teardowns in older, established, high cost neighborhoods, which is why you see more teardowns in the Northeast than in the West.

And there are tons of contemporaries in the East, but only in certain metros. The Hamptons is probably the most contemporary-heavy area east of Palm Springs.

Now I'm confused. This is what we're talking about? Mid-century ranches?

I haven't been to Palm Springs, but I thought we were talking about contemporary modernist architecture. Clean lines, lots of glass, emphasis on natural materials, open light, flowing spaces. These mid-century CA ranches don't really have such characteristics. They're vintage; almost historic at this point.

If we're talking 1950's ranches, then forget the Hamptons. You can hardly find such a home. The Hamptons is packed with stuff like this:

Here's a street in Old Tappan, NJ, that I'm personally familiar with that is filled with mid-century modern stuff. Though some of it has already been torn down and replaced with bigger houses:

I could be wrong, but that's the impression I had.

If we were referring to any kind of newer, modernistic style, then the list becomes a lot bigger. For example, practically the entire city of Santa Fe (and much of Albuquerque) is filled with these adobe style houses that give it this sort of contemporary look. Like this.

Anyway, if we want to include new stuff, then a good source of contemporary house design will be ski towns. With a rustic tilt to it.

Aspen:

Whistler BC. Not sure if some of this counts as "contemporary."

Breckenridge. Worth it seeing the pics just for the snowy look to it.

I was curious about truly contemporary architecture (not mid century). But cool to see the responses regardless
