Since I was born in 84 I wasn't around then but I only know the Portage Place era which was a huge mistake. It is interesting and I never thought of it but the tripple whammy in 1980 that really killed downtown. Kildonan Place and St.Vital mall openings and then the Tribune closing. Also at this time the major recession of 81-82 the major oil boom in Alberta where Manitobans were fleeing to Alberta in record numbers. There was also a growing number of natives moving off the reserves into the north end with no education or job prospects which led to alot more crime and poverty seeping into downtown.

Nice little film. I wish I was around during the steam engine era.

Some very interesting 8mm films can be found here from the 1960s and 1970s of Winnipeg, including downtown and Polo Park (once you get past the people shovelling snow).

Where can I find pictures of Winnipeg (particularly transit and construction-related) 1973 to 1991?

No worries, Andy. Old people need to be isolated and studied so it can be determined what nutrients they have that might be extracted for our personal use.

Does anybody remember in Eaton's a lunch countertop style restaurant with barstools in the late 80's, early 90's on the 2nd floor between the skywalks of Portage Place and Eaton Place? What was the name of that place?

Not early 90s, but I believe 1999-2002 for sure

sad thing about those old 1980s pix of Portage is the street really hasn't changed that much.

Excellent find, Vike..

There's so many things in that film that grab my attention, most notably the varied and interesting streetscape along Portage.

There's no big superblocks yet, no Newport Centre, no Investors Group tower, no Portage Place, no Hydro building..just tiny storefronts.

I love skyscrapers, and all of those buildings that have been built since...but you can't help but to feel that there was more to see at street level back then.

It's also interesting to see that in '66, Broadway wasn't yet a commercial rival to Portage Ave in terms of office space.

In the few shots that are taken from behind the Bay, I can only make out the Monarch Life building (WCB building today)..None of the generic office towers around the convention centre had been built yet.

In fact, I don't think the Convention Centre was even built at the time of filming.
