???? The parkade overlies the entire site.

The gym on the top floor, Studeo55, is moving to 851 Hornby St. in March 1st according to this blog post: http://blog.studeo55.ca/blog/?p=486 and twitter post:
http://twitter.com/#!/Studeo55/statu...53447744061440

I've always though their location on top of this multi-storey parkade was a bit odd.. How many people knew it was there, even?

They had a mail-out the other day - I think it's the old Pantheon location.

Construction fencing up around the site and parkade now closed.

2 hideous parkades closed in as many weeks... So satisfying!

Oh no..I can see the monthly parking increases in the foreseeable future. As parkades get torn down, it will just get more and more expensive to park in downtown.

Not likely. Vacancy rates in parkades have been very high the last few years. If anything, this will just help the remaining parkades operate closer to historical occupancy levels.

Are we talking about Steamworks Steamworks?

Any guesses how long it will take to demolish 745 Thurlow?

Too bad about the viewcone. Assuming nothing tall will be allowed south of Robson in this part of downtown, this site was the only opportunity to make Shangri-la look less out-of-scale when viewed from English Bay:

globeandmail.com

I always found the diagonal facade rather plain.

^ Vancouver's Turn will help with scale of that view if/when it's built. I agree that's SL's worst side.

Thanks for the update Hollywoodnorth!

Hasn't changed much in the last month since the last photo except for the scaffolding on the north and south sides of the building. Demo-prep work continues on the interior.

It seems that Aki, the Japanese restaurant that was in the basement of the parkade will be moving to West Pender St. between Jervis and Broughton. Signs are up, but no indication of when the opening will happen

Before it's torn down I think it is worth noting that this is probably the best 'urban' parking structure in the city. It has street-front retail on both Thurlow and Alberni streets and a second floor of underground retail beneath. It had continuous awnings for weather protection and even the design of the building presented a pretty nice fenestration pattern of open spaces and solid walls, which are far more in keeping with the aesthetic of a building than the open maws of most parking garages. The tenant mix was also good and added to the retail vibrancy of the area. The new office building will be an immeasurable improvement over the parking structure, but let's note that this was pretty exceptional parking structure.

Was the two story office/gym space on the top of that parked a later add on or original. I always felt it looked really bizarre. Especially the laneway side of it

Perhaps it's a shame (or perhaps not, depending...) that this building couldn't have been a bit taller, as mentioned, to balance out the Shangri-La more. Nevertheless, I'm glad we're getting what we're getting. It has a certain "corporate sleekness" to it, something the CBD needs, and is getting more of.
