I took an architect friend of mine from LA on a walk in the city last week. We made our way past Telus Garden on Georgia and his unprompted reaction was that it was a great looking building and a 'hot' gateway gesture for the office lobby. That prompted a brief diatribe about how uninteresting most US commercial architecture is and how lucky we are to have new office projects that are adventurous and well executed. In particular, he noted that quality of the 'Y' columns and the fritted glass soffit/undersides of the tower. He also loved the MNP tower and was head over heels for the new Convention Centre and its integration with the park, multiple street levels, and the successfully retail-activated Canada Place-facing part of the Seawall.

Always nice to have a bit of outside perspective.

Yeah thats weird. I wouldn't think its built to prohibit skateboarding since it almost looks like it was made for skateboarding.

Yup. My thoughts too. Although I could see city hall setting up some sort of a committee who would spend 50 or 100 grand on some study as to what is the best way to stop skateboarders from using the brand new public walk way. Then the outcome would be , they would set up an awsome rail for them to grind on, and call it a day.

That looks cool, but would be covered by skateboarders within 30 seconds of opening. Maybe not if it had big metal or glass fins going across the wave, so you couldn't ride over it?

I think it gets slippery when wet and icy in winter and becomes a hazard.
See the slipping man logo at the bottom.

Which really begs the question as to why it was approved in the first place...

It also begs the question: What is it for?

The wave is a bit of a gimmic. Kids love it in the summer but it's far from functional and a downright hazard in the rain/entire winter.

It would be scary to see kids rolling down those slopes and then crashing into the railing.....

Details on Telus Gardens’ Two-Storey Video ScreenPosted on January 27, 2015

Details about the new ‘Media Facade’ on the Telus Gardens office tower are emerging and it seems like it will be a distinctive feature. The screen is located on the west façade, between the 16th and 18th floors, and is approximately 26′ x 40′. It is only visible in one direction from both Georgia and Seymour Streets.

Here’s a description from the application:

“A simple and proven technology of back projection onto a retractable screen will provide a glare-free static image or full motion video. At dusk the screen descends, and the façade transforms.

When the performance is over, the screen ascends and the office tower is back to business. Content will be a mix of public art (including community messaging) and tenant exposure with the City of Vancouver reserving the right for special event programming.”
http://www.vancouvermarket.ca/2015/0...-video-screen/

Quote:
Because back projection is susceptible to light, the projectors are only intended to be operated in low light scenarios, such as in early to late evening. It is intended that the operation of the projectors would be tied to the building operation system and only activate after dusk. In the winter this would likely be close to 6:00 pm, and in the summer, it would be close to 10:00 pm. The building operation system would automate the start time of the projectors in conjunction with the setting of the sun and external light conditions.

On dark winter days, the screen could also be viewed on weekends and holidays, when the tenant space that the screen is located within was not being actively used. The animation of the urban landscape on dark, grey winter days would help to enliven the urban environment.

Interesting. I guess they have to use it only when it is dark if they implement it with video projectors. Those are no good in sunlight.

I've been by this corner of the office tower on Richards street so many times but it wasn't until today when they had cleared all the fencing and stuff away that I was aware of this set of concrete steps and door. Seems kind of incongruous with the look of the rest of the front of the building. I would expect to see something like that in a back alley where an emergency exit was required. Also, it doesn't seem to leave much room on the sidewalk for people to pass. Maybe (hopefully) it's not permanent?

Yeah that's not what you want. And call me crazy but I kind of wish the media screen took up the whole western face of the protruding box.

If you look closely at the bottom of the concrete steps you can see a horizontal line drawn. It's probably the level to which the sidewalk cement will be poured to. That thing's going to be permanent.

I guess the Richards Street side is considered to be the "back side" of the building where few people will go(?). It's so odd they didn't have the steps inside the building and a discreet door at ground level.

Kingston Hotel guests who arrive by the Canada Line can squeeze by with their bags on what little sidewalk is left.

This makes little sense to me. Is it a fire escape? Yet it's only 3 window panes away from the Georgia side.

This has to be one of the stupidest things I've seen
