I'm sorry I set off such a storm. I honestly wasn't making a value judgement one way or the other on the architecture. It just so happened the first thing to pop into my mind was how it'd be almost impossible to build something like this where I live.

Even so, practically every state in the country seems to have a guy like this that just builds wacky big cool things. A quick browse through Atlas Obscura yields some cool examples...

^^I read that the Russian design is/was the first wooden skyscraper. Didn't the government demolish it for safety reasons?

I heard it was demolished too, I don't know the exact reasons, but I think it was because it was deemed (gasp!) structurally unsound.
