Do you want the short version or the long-winded, socio-economic version?
1. Salt kills the trees off. gross
2. Many dont think it is a priority. (higher taxes! Silly hall!) fail
3. Trees actually dont have a very high survival rate in Calgary.
4. I think many people in Alberta actually think that "if things look good, they must be raising taxes and therefore should not beautify anything....or so it seems. This way of thinking will die off hopefully.
4. Vancouver does a bang-up job of highway landscaping.
5. Edmonton started planting the Gateway Boulevard and whitemud recently. It will fill in and hopefully provide a precedent.
6. Drivers and highway engineers have been known to think trees are "dangerous" on highways.
7. Developers dont like to block commercial and retail signage.
8. Trees need lots of maintenance and water around Calgary, there would have to be a good intellegent plan to keep everything watered at all times and this may put strain on our water resources.....Water management (offsetting the amount of surface drainage that comes from paved surfaces) could be a way to get more trees to survive......like Wascana Park in Regina.
We could adopt a system like salt lake where they have potable and non potable water systems to keep the trees alive.
7. Things will get better as people realize the importance of trees for clean air and the positive psychological effect trees can have on society
