So Tim Connolly who's had several concussions and many, many other injuries (bone spur problems, broken rib, 2 cracked vertabrea, etc.) is considered a bargain at 4.75 per season by some Maple Leafs fans.

Markov, on the other hand, is considered an overpayment at 5.75 per season while he has never suffered injuries to the head/brain. His right knee is fucked up but with modern medicine, you never know.

Markov is a top 5 D-men in the league WHEN HEALTHY.
Connolly is a 70 pts player at best WHEN HEALTHY.

I know opinions are bias but cmon...

Never said anything about Markov, but since you brought it up...

Markov was never a top 5 d-man. And his injury is recurrent. Connolly hasn't had a concussion since 2006, and his recent injuries have been isolated incidents.

What the hell does "with modern medicine you never know" even mean? Are you saying he was using acupuncture the whole time before this? He has a recurrent knee problem. Modern medicine hasn't been able to get rid of it.

Markov is a top 6 defenceman (2008 and 2009 in Norris Trophy voting.)

58pts in 07-08 good for 6th in NHL.

64pts in 08-09 good for 2nd in NHL.

34pts in 45 games in 09-10, on pace for around 60pts again but then the injuries hit. If he had been healthy the last 2 years he'd probably be considered top 3, let alone top 5. Its a real shame. He was just entering his prime in 07-08 after a 46 and 49 point seasons. His point totals were growing every year since 05-06.

Its not just the points with Markov. He is superb defensively.

I expect his pts total to go up with Subban...

He got 64 pts in 08-09 (2nd among D-men) while playing with Mike Komisarek (think about it, Mike Komisarek).

Before injuries kept him out of play (one freak skate cut, and two right knee injuries), Markov was SECOND after Lidstrom for most pts by a D-men post-lockout.

Keep in mind, that Markov has never really played in front of a really good team... and was the main reason why Souray broke the PP goals record in one season.

That year(06-07) the Markov-Komisarek pair was the only one on the team in the +'s. Souray on the other hand was -28.

I think the canucks and their fans would be better off pretending they didn't even make the playoffs.

As a leafs fan I have NO FAITH in this team after aquiring Connolly. In fact I don't see any point in watching this year.

His health may be an issue, and the salary Burke gave him may be debatable but overreacting much? In his past few relevant seasons, his stats have averaged out to be about 70 points if 82 games played. On this Leafs team, he'll easily play on the first line alongside Kessel. I don't see how signing a veteran, play-maker can harm a team. Especially when the current set of Leafs Centre-man is weak.

The Lebda/Slaney for Franson/Lombardi was a huge win for the Leafs.

Welcome to Montreal Erik Cole!!!

http://www.cbc.ca/gfx/images/sports/...e-erik_584.jpg

Interesting stat:
Quote:
A 6-foot-2, 205-pound power forward, Cole ranked 13th in the league with 225 hits last season and he's one of five forwards -- Dustin Brown, Alexander Ovechkin, Brenden Morrow and David Backes were the others -- that had at least 25 goals and 200 hits last season.
The lineup could look like this

Cammalleri-Plekanec-Pacioretty
Gionta-Gomez-Cole
Kostitsyn-Eller-Desharnais
Darche-White-Moen

Markov-Yemelin
Subban-Gorges
Gill-Weber
Spacek

Price
Budaj

We may potentially have 2 power forwards next season. It's been years we haven't had any so to have 2 would be almost too good to be true.

Leaf fans always amaze me. They are trying to convince themselves that if Connolly plays for the full year, he will get 70 pts.

That's a big if. He' hasn't played a full season in 02-03. He's injury plagued. Sure, he might fill a void in your line up, but that void comes right back once he's injured.

Over payment for an injuried player. KEep it up Burke

Overreacting much there buddy.
He's played 141 games in the last 2 seasons and he's signed to two years, that's not an over payment, it's more of a tryout.

And anyone who thinks Markov was ever a top 5 defenseman should lay off that special koolaid.

What? Over reacting? I couldn't care less how much more the leafs continue to suck. Enjoy it.

Selectively choosing your time period to make him look better. He's missed 1/3 of the regular season in the last 3 years, and even higher if you go even further back.

Markov wasn't part of my discussion... I don't think he's a top 5 d man either... maybe hes top 10-15 in the league... maybe. Markov would definitely fit into the top D pairing on most teams.

Connolly will be another in a long line of post-lockout "saviours" for the Leaves.

McCabe, Tucker, McArthur, the "Monster" (just off the top of my head)... guys who are average anywhere else but get elevated to star status solely based on where they play. Certainly not because of their play.

How is choosing the last 2 years mean i'm being selective?
He's played 88% of the games in the last 2 seasons.
Could it possibly be that he may be in better health then he was 3-5 years ago? OMG, what a great assumption. I wonder if we can get a man on the moon now. And even if he's not healthy, a 2 year contract is far from putting the team in a tough financial situation. It's not like they signed Sourray.
The Markov comment was to others, not you specifically, and i do agree he is more 10-15 in the rankings.
