Thanks for the replies to my inquiry.

Edit: Just realized in the Seattle picture, but are the middle four lanes designed to switch direction to go with the main flow of traffic?

GWB is actually the only bridge in the world that's busier than the Bay. Last I checked, anyway.

Over the last 30 years, the 2 bridges have swaped the distinction every couple of years-only for the last 4 consecutive years-its been The GW with Bay Area traffic getting better due to the dot com crash.

The difference is that the Bay Bridge is far more vital economically to the Bay Area then the GW is to New York-NY has far more viable driving options within close proximity whereas the BB's alternatives add 30 miles or so.

Yes, there are reversible express lanes on I-5 north of town (pictured) and I-90 west of Downtown.

WHITE MARSH, Md. -- An hours-long traffic nightmare on Interstate 95 near Baltimore is finally over with the road reopening after a series of multi-vehicle crashes.

Here is the 401 on extremely-rare good days (traffic-wise)

!!!!

The King's Highway No. 401 (also known as the Macdonald-Cartier Freeway) is a freeway that extends across Southern Ontario, Canada. It is the longest 400-Series Highway in Ontario, the busiest highway in North America and among the busiest in the world. (wikipedia)

The 401 is widely considered to be North America's busiest highway, with an estimated Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) of over 425,000 in 2004, between the Weston Road and Highway 400 interchanges in Toronto. This surpasses the Santa Monica Freeway in Los Angeles, and several Interstate freeways in Houston, Texas. Due to its triple use as the main trade, commuting and recreational corridor in Ontario, 24-hour traffic volumes can exceed the 500,000 level on some days. The just-in-time inventory systems of the highly integrated auto industry in Michigan and Ontario have made the highway the busiest truck route in North America. Highway 401 also includes the continent's busiest multi-structure bridge at Hogg's Hollow in Toronto (four structures for the highway's four roadway beds).

Today the stretch of Highway 401 that passes through the Greater Toronto Area ranges from 6 to 18 lanes, and the stretch between Highway 403 and Brock Road in Pickering is thought to be the world's longest continuous stretch of highway having 10 or more lanes.

Nothing in sync with a traffic jam, but following in the footsteps of similar photos previously posted:

Detroit's worst interchange is where through-traffic of I-75 (the region's most heavily-traveled) has to pretty much "exit" and make a 90 degree turn to the north with just 2 lanes. Needless to say, there is always backups.

This part of the Fisher Fwy always backs up too during rush hour. Further back, cargo truck traffic rules the road in order to cross the Ambassador Bridge to Canada. Personal vehicles back up in this spot as they approach the Tunnel to Canada downtown.

Atlanta's downtown connector during rush hour.

And here's a little Atlanta traffic related trivia question (albeit somewhat ancient in origin).

Who knows what the term "tight squeeze" refers to? And get your minds out of the gutter.
