Why are there so many massive parking lots in that area?

Up until probably the late 1960's, the area was a lowrise residential neighbourhood. When the last oil boom came around in the 1970's, much of the existing area was torn down, much of it with the intention of building towers. Unfortunately the oil bust of the 1980's followed and those massive parking lots remained.

At least, that's how I think it went down...

You are correct Boris. A shame, buts it part of who Calgary is/was.

The two big lots to the north are owned by the same company (Oxford). They are for residential projects. No idea why they are bypassing the biggest boom in the city's history to develop these lots? What are they waiting for, a hotter economy and better condo market. That is prime real estate. Good projects would sell very, very well there.

they did have a proposal about 5 years or so ago called Eau Claire Estates. The only thing they can build is residential on these lots. I'm sure when the time is right they'll work with a residential developer to build up that land. If it makes economic sense, I'm sure they'll do it.

^Oxford's a pretty patient company with deep pockets. My guess is that they'll hang in there for a while longer. I'd love to see them do some thing sooner than later of course

EDIT: For anyone who doesn't spot it in the pictures, there is a pool of water on the East side of the site that seems to be fed from pipes going to the outside of the site (where you can also see more water). This is because the site is about a block away from the Bow River so there is a lot of groundwater. Excavation might slow down a bit from here on.

Nice updates Boris. This building is really moving along, it doesn't seem very long ago when it was still a parking lot.

I just know that some of you guys are going to get sick of seeing these excavation picks, but I'm going to keep posting them.

And so our mighty dwarves keep on delving deeper...

Oxford has now added a webcam for this project... not a huge image, and certainly not as good as what we can get from the ground, but something useful for viewing from afar...

How far down are they, and how far down are they going to go?
