Take a look at the new Emancipation Park in Houston

Quote:
Emancipation Park in Houston has undergone a major transformation courtesy of Chicago-based Perkins + Will. The revamp to the 10-acre park has been a long time coming. Preliminary work began in 2011, but now the project is finally complete, offering a new “Recreation Center” and spiraling sculpture that reflects the vision of the park’s founders.

Opened to the public in 1872 by its founders, Reverend John Henry “Jack” Yates, Richard Allen, Richard Brock, and Reverend Elias Dibble, Emancipation Park is firmly rooted in African-American history. At the time of its opening, the park was the first truly public park in Houston. In the years that followed, it became a vibrant space, hosting games of tennis and volleyball as well as numerous other community activities. Boasting a swimming pool from the 1930s, the site was also the only place where African-Americans could swim in the city.

The American Building (811 Dallas) is being prepped for demo, floor-by-floor. A new development will eventually take up the entire block.

Gosh, this Emancipation thing is fine... Contemporary Chicago's firms are good like it's somewhat insolent, as ever, showing why today's design is the best ever.

Well, at least, I like the fact that they're very advertised over here.

My wife works at Hilcorp (1111 Travis St) across the street and they own that building. Heard about the demo through her but she has no idea what's planned. They are keeping garages for now...just demoing the building.

The Moderne at Rice Village

Formerly known as Morningside Mansions, this project stalled shortly after topping out. Construction will resume soon with move-ins by December.

17-stories of senior living planned for Rice Village

Quote:
Bridgewood Property Co. has purchased a 1-acre property near Rice Village for a 17-story apartment high-rise for seniors offering an urban location with skyline views.

The Houston-based company expects to start construction on The Village of Southampton in 12 months. It closed on the property at the northwest corner of Kelvin and Robinhood this week. The seller has leased back the property for a year. The property currently is occupied by a bar.

Is this the bar some of the residents have had issues with in the past?

Im sure current residents will be thrilled that their views will be blocked.

Hans' Bier Haus, a different bar on Quensby Ave. It too is adjacent to the high-rise.

If there's ground level retail, aesthetically pleasing and it's got some height (10 stories) then it's not that bad. Downtown needs garages..bad if its going widdle away at all the surface lots.

The garage will have GFR; an office tower will be built above the garage when a tenant is secured.

Photos: Luxury downtown apartment debuts in former Texaco building

Quote:
The Star has been born.

The former Texaco building at 1111 Rusk Street has been redeveloped into a 286-unit luxury apartment project and is ready for leasing, according to a release. It’s the first time the century-old building has invited guests since 1989.

Units are between about 730 to 1,730 square feet. There are 207 one-bedroom, one-bath units and 79 two-bedroom, two-bath units. The building's first tenants moved in late last month.
