Asheville: A little night music...

Here's the deal. In preparation for our upcoming trip to Europe next month, my partner got himself a new camera and gave his old one to me. We've been out practicing, him with his new camera and me with my new old camera, trying to get to the point that we can take pictures worth showing off when we're wandering around London, Paris, and Edinburgh.

I've also been practicing with some photo editing software. Here's what I took last night and what I was able to do with it.

Let me know when you'll be in town and I'd be happy to give you a tour.

Thanks for leaving a comment. I was rather proud of these photos, personally, but they don't seem to have made much of a splash.

I missed these somewhere in the last week. Asheville is great subject matter. These are lovely.

A suggestion for traveling is a Gorillapod. Light and easy to use.

Thanks to you also. If you want to know the truth, despite the fact that this new old camera takes much better pictures than mine does, I'm a little concerned about hauling it around busy places like London and Paris. It's not at all compact, and you have to squint through the viewfinder to take any pictures at all. On my old camera, you could see the pictures on the screen and have an idea of what you'd just snapped.

I can say... It's colorful and lovely in the daytime and can be lonely in the night, although it helped that the moon was full.

I've taken quite a few of those myself.

Just now realized you posted these. Amazing shots. I don't think I've ever seen an Asheville night shot thread on here before. I think the the B&W ones are the best! Keep it up!

I don't why but these two just stuck out to me. :-)

Great shots. I'll be in Asheville a few days for New Years. It's been around 10 years since my last stop through there, so I'm looking forward to seeing how it has changed.

You'll be amazed, especially downtown. If you drive on I-240, look at all the silhouetted construction cranes.

Beautiful photos, hauntedheadnc! I especially loved the pic of the Courthouse and City buildings with the moon in between. Amazing!

I was just in town recently and was enthralled to see 3 cranes over downtown at the same time!

I sure miss your updates in the occasional Asheville thread. But maybe you got tired of doing those.

And yet some more love from Atlanta, hh.

I think these shots are beautiful, and thanks for sharing.

Have a great trip across the Pond, and Merry Christmas!

Thanks! The moon was very cooperative that night.

In regards to cranes, by my count there are four up right now, with more coming. The cranes I know of are at the site of a mixed-use retail/office and affordable residential building on Eagle Street (with a hotel and another apartment building coming soon nearby); the addition to the social services building; the AC Hotel (a nine story building going up on the site of the three story parking deck which replaced the historic eight story Langren Hotel back in the 60's); and the Cambria Suites across from the Grove Arcade. I got the crane from the Cambria Suites site in this thread, but I thought I'd gotten more, especially since the social services expansion is going in across Commerce Street from the Ethiopian restaurant -- where I hope you ate.

I stopped doing the updates mainly because nobody cares about little places.

Thanks much. I was very pleased with how these came out, although it gives me pause that the camera I used was a lot bulkier than my old one. I'm hoping it won't be too awkward in Europe. I'm plenty awkward enough as it is and don't need the help.
