Not surprised about the hotel. Hotels are closing all over the place due to the proliferation of A&BB for personal use and the decline in conventions for corporate use.
They are, however, very useful as student housing and in fact they couldn't be better. The rooms have their own bathrooms, usually their own small fridges, have high security systems, beds, tvs, are big enough for 2 people, and combining 2 rooms for grad students/couples, are fully furnished, have all the high speed connections, and are in the downtowns which uniformly have the best transit such as this one.
This is where gov't should move in any buy them via universities/colleges as it is vastly cheaper than building new student residents from scratch and can basically can be moved into tomorrow. The only thing they need to do is set aside one unit for cooking facilities and voila..........student housing.
