You never know though. Ottawa had most of its murders before the summer. And it has been hot.

Come one Toronto hit 100. You'll be at least number 1 in that.

No, but daylight shootings with large numbers of bystanders would be of concern. That doesn't fit the model of Edmonton homicides.

Also Edmonton's homicide rate this years is almost half of last year. But it is still early. Recent report had Calgary gun violence higher than Edmonton this year.

Sorry, what I meant were the brazen daytime shootings.

Thunder Bay is up to 4 now. A death in the north end over the weekend was declared homicide yesterday. Police are trying to piece together what happened with information from the public and patchy personal surveillance camera coverage in the area.

There may be a fifth homicide; a body found in the river over the weekend is still unidentified and police haven't said anything about the cause of death. They released a photo of the body to see if anyone can help identify them. They claim the race of the deceased is "not known". The area is a popular hangout for drunks and drug users, so it's probably (but not necessarily certain) that the person was one of them.

Homicide #4

Body pulled from river

Our homicide rate is now about 3.5/100,000; Toronto is at 2.8/100,000. Highest ever recorded in Thunder Bay was 9.6/100,000; the equivalent in Toronto would be 251.

I didn't actually look up Toronto's population, it was apparently 2.81 million in 2016. TBPS patrol area (and therefore the statistical area we use for homicide rate here; it includes a municipality beside the city) had 114,000 in 2016.

Think Calgary is sitting at 11 right now, not bad considering we're 3/4 of the way through the year.

Cities that have had at least 30 homicides Top 5

Winnipeg

2011 - 41
2004 - 34
2012 - 31
2009 - 30
1987 - 30

Edmonton

2011 - 47
2017 - 45
2016 - 41
2005 - 39
2006 - 36

Calgary

2015 - 37
1978 - 37
2008 - 34
2007 - 32
2014 - 32

Montreal

1975 - 112
1989 - 103
1977 - 101
1972 - 97
1983 - 88

Toronto

1991 - 89
2007 - 86
2005 - 80
2018 - 74 (So Far)
2016 - 74

I know Vancouver has had years with 40+ homicides in the 90’s but its very hard to find actual figures just for the city. The biggest thing to take in from the list is how Montreal’s numbers have dramatically fallen since those years.

Also the most homicides ever in the GTA is 111 in 2007. Right now Toronto is at 110.

Toronto - 74
Peel Region - 18
York Region - 8
Durham Region - 8
Halton Region - 2
