Ottawa from the Air in this photo dated to September of 1955.

You can see a lot of the old city in this one, including the Eddy Plant, the Printing Bureau on Nepean Point, the temporary buildings on Sussex, Elgin and Wellington, etc.

There's quite a few buildings where Confederation Park and the NAC are now, but if you look along Slater and Albert half of downtown seems to be a parking lot!

Via Marty McFly - his GF is reading a book about wartime St. John's. This description cracked me up.

The cover for the first official performance of our old national anthem. One of the very, very, very few occasions when the pink, white and green was used in any official government capacity.

Very cool, I just spent the past 4 nights in its hotel. Was a great spot being connected to RESO and easy walk up to Sainte Catherine and down to Vieux Montreal. My fiancée and I had a great first trip to Montreal. Awesome place!!

Funny because to me it's the most canadienne sight. Most of villages / small towns of St-Laurent valley looked like that. At least all of those that were settled before the 1850s.

Southern end of downtown Halifax circa 1930. Still mostly a Victorian scale since there wasn't much construction from 1900-1930.

This shows how much stuff was torn down along the southern end of the downtown part of Hollis Street. Also, there was a large building inside the Citadel that was torn down. I have never been able to find a decent picture of it. I'd guess it was a Victorian-era addition. The larger building that survives was completed by 1832.

Never been to Winnipeg, sad to say. But it's always been my feeling that the Manitoba Legislature isn't as front-and-centre as it ought to be.

If this is true, where should it have been placed in the city. I'm thinking it could have been plopped down right at the intersection of Broadway and Memorial - that would likely be a little more dramatic...

Wow, when I posted my picture of Ottawa, I din't even notice the Winnipeg set. Impressive stuff. Lot of history still remaining. Portage and Main seems to be the only spot that has been completely redeveloped.

I'm not so sure building the Legislature across the way would have made much of a difference. It would then be missing the key water feature of most Parliamentary Buildings. A better spot might have been the Forks?

I feel like we could say the same for all three legislative buildings in the Prairies. They all seem to be a little off the beaten path (not to mention similar look and similar grounds).
