It seemed like a weak article that made a lot of points supported by little more than anecdotes, and what data they did post wasn't given context. For example they talked about the number of French immigrants rising by 50% over a decade or so but they didn't point out that this works out to a transition from about 1.3% of the city to 1.7% (the city grew during this period too).

They didn't say what rents are like in the Plateau, which would have been interesting.

I agree that Parisians have kind of unfortunate standards when it comes to bathrooms. Is the suggestion that they are all idiots and will pay twice the going rate for an apartment because they think it is palatial and can't read Craigslist or whatever else people use in Montreal for apartment listings?

The Economist article they link about culture shock is maybe 1/3 devoted to differences in the use of tu vs. vous. This is something Anglophones tend to talk about a lot because there is no English equivalent. The article suggests that people move to Quebec and get confused about who their best friend is because of the use of "tu". The Economist can explain this to English speakers in two paragraphs but native French speakers remain confused!

There have been a few past attempts at getting a number of Caribbean island countries (that were British colonies or former British colonies) to join Canada back in the 19th and 20th century, a recent one in the 2000s was the attempt with Turks and Caicos.

Why not? But then the name should be changed to Western Union or something, cause Canada ain't exactly European by geographical data, and there would be a huge fight over the choice of a city to set up the capital of such a union.

I thought about that already. Like what if the Americas and Europe were a single federal country, since we've shared lots of basic cultural traits over the past centuries? It surely would be great, much power... Some crushing power! But today's people are too self-centered and not wise enough to make it yet.

Yea, I think the more reasonable approach would be to join the European single market (freedom of movement for capital, goods, services, and people) through bilateral agreements like Switzerland.

Alberta's regulations on the grading and selling of honey are really stupid too. Why does your province only have one health authority???? That seems bloaty and dictatorial. Why not have 24 of them like Ontario?
