Is there any fear by the new developers of the Rault Center that its history will cause problems? People my age can't think of the building without seeing the bodies.

Nah I don't think many people know the history of it anymore. Plus, for some reason people who come to New Orleans and visit seem like to like gruesome stories like that. I can see this place becoming a haunted tour stop lol

What would be more interesting is if they make old Charity into apartments. Probably a few spirits left in there haha

Wow, that Rault hotel has got to be the most unimaginative design for reuse I can think of. They're basically just putting it back the way it was, no new design elements or anything remotely courageous.

This isn't even a historic building, there's nothing to preserve! Just a boring-ass 60s office box, now preserved in amber. Ugh. Even Houston has done some interesting stuff with reuse now.

At least the new infill proposals in Mid City and the LGD are nice... I'm especially excited for the LGD one, around the way from my place. The Magazine/Melpomene corner really needs something, and with Jonathan Tate as architect, it's bound to be something fresh.

Bayou Wine Garden slated to open by end of summer
http://midcitymessenger.com/2015/05/...end-of-summer/

Quote:
Bayou Wine Garden, an old-world-style wine bar and restaurant, is slated to open adjacent to Bayou Beer Garden in Mid-City by the end of summer, according to owning partner David Demarest.

Demarest said a construction crew ground broke Monday on the new venture, and the official opening is slated for Sep. 10 — although owners may push that date up even sooner. The restaurant and wine bar, which will connect by courtyard to the beer hall and eatery Bayou Beer Garden, was approved by New Orleans City Planning Commission in November and then by New Orleans City Council in December.

“We’re really excited,” Demarest said. “We’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback. And we’re trying to do more of what we know how to do, which is patio setting dining.”

Architectural plans call for an arched bridge to connect the two bars outdoors. Although owners want to replicate the casual atmosphere of Bayou Beer Garden, the new bar will also be slightly more polished, offering “French Quarter-style” dining and wine sipping complete with in-house cured meats, cheeses and more than 150 different types of wine.

Just a little thing, but I noticed just now that Xavier is building what must be a pedestrian bridge over Washington Ave from the main campus to the Convocation Center.

Looks like the bankruptcy case has been dismissed for Market Street Properties, owner of the power plant. Joe Jaeger agreed to pay their debts in exchange for control of the property, and he's looking for "a successful commercial and entertainment area beginning with the adaptive reuse of the iconic structure for a large anchor retail tenant".

http://www.nola.com/business/index.s...l#incart_river

Not sure what tenant they're looking for, but I sure hope it isn't Bass Pro Shops again... their Memphis deal for the old Pyramid Arena, like every other Bass Pro store, required huge taxpayer subsidy to prop up a business that doesn't make economic sense. Cabela's has the exact same business model of bilking taxpayers, so they're not any better.

Very much agree with you. It makes no sense to put a hunting store in the middle of a city...the last place someone is actually going hunting. Given the location I don't know that any suburban oriented stores make sense save for an IKEA and they like large floorplates for their building. They would probably either touch down in Elmwood or the area by Earhart where Restaurant Supple and Costco is.

Id like to see something like neiman marcus or Nordstrom there, an Alamo drafthouse cinema, shakeshack etc.

What does everyone think of the Convention Center's plan for the linear park on Convention Center Blvd.? I support improving it, but am concerned about taking out a lane of traffic in each direction. Seems traffic is bad enough there at times with two lanes. Especially when buses are dropping off at the Convention Center or if it is a day when cruises are leaving.

Also, does this plan basically mean the streetcar plans to extend down Convention Center Blvd. are dead?

Yes.. they plan to do some sort of people mover. I support the improvements . Traffic I think can still work for two lanes. remember the cruise ship traffic is at the very end and that wont be affected.

Great to see substantial infill development in the 2000 block of Canal!

For some reason I got an email from the Paramount. Prices start at 1875/mo and up!

That pricing is for the "loft" units in the building compared to the regular units in this pricing schedule.

http://paramountnola.com/availability/

With all of the downtown housing coming online in the next year, I'm curious to see what kind of relief renters will see around the city. As a renter myself, it's pretty crazy out there just compared to a few years ago, and I don't see how the city can continue handling these prices without real, major economic gains. Eventually everyone will need to do AirBnB to pay rent!

That's why more inventory is good ...we want to stay affordable .

Also Virgin Hotel is looking to open a location here. This is Richard Bransons new hotel chain. One is currently open in Chicago

Virgin Hotel...interesting. I wonder if it will be a new build or a redevelopment. Nice to see potential foreign investment in town.

I know the location but until things are concrete I'll keep it to myself . This location would be new build.

I think the people mover concept on Convention Center Blvd is a much better replacement for the older riverfront streetcar. Take that old streetcar alignment and use it for a bus road. Hopefully the new system works with NORTA's streetcar system and isn't some kind of weird one-off. They'd have to build the tracks with trolley gauge but it could be a great way to extend rail down towards the LGD.

I thought they scrapped the people mover? If I remember correctly they were just going to add moving walkways inside the convention center instead.
