In the aerial, the freight building seems to have a nice façade

presented a formal building that hid the transportation uses behind.
(or, I guess, like any other train station)

I wonder if there are any pics of it from the front?
I wonder if its demolition was related to the construction of the Pender diversion (to Keefer) [EDIT: The diversion was east of Carrall, so no]

I can't find any images of it either at the Archives or VPL. There's an earlier single storey building back in the 1910s, and I have a 1963 aerial that shows just the Pender building still standing, but everything else behind already cleared away. That doesn't show the front of the building at all.

I assume (but could be wrong) that the Abbott extension, the Pender diversion and all the other changes to the roads in that area were a package, once the freight tracks had gone.

Yeah, I just spent a few minutes on the Archives site as well - no luck.

The Pender Diversion was east of Carrall, so probably unrelated - and once Abbott was extended, Keefer would have been extended, making the diversion unnecessary.

I did find a 1981 pic of the site with a row of shrubs across what would be the Abbott RoW. There was a similar pic with shrubs with BC Place under construction in the background - so I think Abbott would have been extended in conjunction with BC Place / Expo 86.

There was another pic with a more modern industrial office building to the east, also probably from the 1970s.

Found another aerial of it from 1951:

I found one that shows some of the building still standing in 1973 (City of Vancouver Archives CVA 447-98) http://searcharchives.vancouver.ca/c...west-pender-st

I think the problem was the desire of planners to keep high density only downtown, resulting in low-density heritage buildings being demolished, much like what is happening right now.

There's a small image of the building in the 1974 edition of Exploring Vancouver. Apparently the City Archives have the original photos from that publication, and are digitizing them, so it should appear in their image bank soon. It was built in 1929.

I suppose your version of "heritage buildings" that you don't want to see torn down refers to the thousands of low-density urban sprawl run-down structures, rotting walk-ups, Vancouver Specials of the 60s-70s and monster homes of the 90s that you value so dearly.

Road Trip - Summer of '54: Amazing Trip Diary Through Vintage Photos of A Freelance Photographer
On July 31, 1954, freelance photographer Rosemary Gilliat and her girlfriends, Anna Brown, Audrey James and Helen Salkeld, packed up Helen's Plymouth station wagon and began their 12,391-kilometre road trip across Canada.

During the next 38 days, they crossed five provinces and four states, travelling through Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Washington, Montana, North Dakota and Minnesota, and returning to Ottawa on September 6.

Here is their amazing trip diary through 98 vintage photos.

Follow the link for the rest of the pictures, which includes ones that would be off-topic/outside Vancouver. In 1954, railways had passengers and the highways were made of mud

Came across this pic of 401 West Georgia.
I didn't realize it used to have interior feature lighting.
Cathedral Place also used to have similar feature lighting on its corner windows too.

Note that the original image was flipped right to left, so I uploaded and fixed it.

That Metrotown photo is incredible. I was doubting myself that it would really be it, but it certainly is. So much change in that area.

All in the eye of the beholder, looks like poorly-conceived 70s blight to me.

False Creek - March 21, 1975

This photo was likely taken from the office building that stands at 805 West Broadway in Fairview.
