Yeah, it might have been the fall of 1999 then. Another building that's missing is the Texas Department of Health building up near West 49th Street up by the Triangle. That building was built in 2001.

This one here.

Yeah 1999 sounds about right. Also, 300 West 6th was well on its way up in December 2000, when this was taken (the fenced-off area in the foreground is roughly where Shoal Creek Walk is now).

I remember the state office building going up too around that time.

I've never seen these before. This is pretty awesome. Two photos showing the Bank of America Center under construction.

Is the BoA tower constructed from steel beams instead of concrete? Its hard to tell from those photos.

The author's last sentence in the article sums it up pretty well for me. The gold mirror cladding of yesteryear would have stood out more today than it did back then, even when there were very few buildings downtown that matched its height. That's due to the fact that what we have today is oh so similar in color.

The Matriarch

Thanks Kevin for the great photo. I did not know the Golden Lady was the modern Matriarch of the area.

Cesar Chavez used to be called Water Avenue for good reason. This was during the 1935 flood.

Congress Avenue bridge. Note the twin towers on the Texas School for the Deaf.

I was reading some stuff on the 1935 flood. Ironically, the 281 bridge in Marble Falls was wiped out in that one, which is when they built the steel truss bridge that was recently replaced. The 2900 bridge in Kingsland getting wiped out will be a big issue for folks in Sunrise Beach, etc. Too few crossings throughout Burnet and Llano counties. They do have another bridge proposed just below Wirtz Dam (between Marble Falls and Granite Shoals), and the next cross to on the other side of Kingsland is Hwy 29.

My uncle and aunt have a Lakehouse at LBJ in Sunrise Beach. I've spent many a summer boating on that lake. I've boated under the 2900 bridge, it's surreal knowing that bridge is gone. In my opinion Lake LBJ is the prettiest of the Highland Lakes, it's very sad to see the damage this flood has caused.

Yeah, I agree. And Sunrise Beach folks need to drive a lot farther to get basic stuff now. For instance, Kingsland has the closest HEB, but it's not just a few minutes down the road anymore. I'm really glad that the 1431 bridge held up, but the Colorado River flow was significantly less this time around. Both bridges needed expanding, so I wouldn't be surprised if the new 2900 bridge would at least be wide enough for four lanes (or two separate bridges like the new 281 bridge). In the meantime, I hope they get a temporary bridge up - like a military pontoon bridge or something.

Before Chase Bank Tower and the Dobie Center were redone.

I'm glad they cleaned up the area around the bridge. It really looked overgrown back then. The landscaping they've done is much better. It also improves the view.

From sometime in 1967. The Westgate Tower was under construction. You can see the construction elevator track running up the side, and they hadn't added the mechanical penthouse yet either.

1969 - Jester Center under construction. This view is looking southeast - this is what the view looks like today.

Amazing how barren the river looks. And it's not even that long ago, relatively speaking. 60 years?

Yeah, it always gets me how few trees there were back then. I think the flooding the river endured before the dams were built probably prevented many trees from growing. That walkway there leading to the river is the same one that leads to the Stevie Ray Vaughan statue, and that walkway today is lined with trees.

I wonder if they were off a year or so on that photo. It looks like Dobie has the current facade, which wasn't installed until 1989/90. I guess it could just be the lighting.

Strange to see DKR with only the Home side with the large upper deck bleachers... I often forget how awkward that looked.

I was wondering that myself. Also, the area around One Congress Plaza looks odd, I thought it might be a crane being lowered, but I guess it's just the grain.
