That's because it was built by the French and Spanish. In general, San Francisco would be authentic American. That thread was art; damn good job!

New Orleans has such a great architectural heritage! It's a shame that most of the more recent examples are so fucking unremarkable when not out-and-out vulgar!

The French Quarter only was built by French and Spanish. The Garden District and much of the other historic areas were built by Americans for Americans as was most of San Francisco, however the original Mission San Francisco Asis is not only still there (on Dolores St)but still used for mass and a bit of the Spanish Presidio (fort) was incorporated into what became the Officer's Club (until the Army moved out).

Anyway, does the presence of one of the old streetcars in a photo mean the St. Charles streetcar line is again up and running because it wasn't last January (ran only on Canal St. where the photo appears to have been taken) when I was last there and that was most inconvenient?

I'll chime in on the "Is it safe?" debate--absolutely if you stick to the areas mentioned (and I would add Faubourg Marigny), especially at night. There were areas of New Orleans I would have avoided after dark (and a few even in daylight) even before the hurricanes.

Better hurry. Last January there were lots of French Quarter condos and flats for sale--several on most blocks and many more than I recall seeing on pre-Katrina visits. You might get a deal.

The streetcar on St. Charles is only running to Lee Circle right now, but the line will be open to Napoleon Ave. starting next month. The remainder of the line should reopen next year. They were recently installing new tracks in front of my church on Carrollton Ave. at Willow St.
