What does "livable" even mean? It's always so vague. Vancouver always ranks at the top but I know the majority of natives are struggling to get by on their paychecks there.

I just figured out why there is a homeless problem in S.F. It's the most livable city in the U.S.

I haven't been able to find the exact list used in this survey.

Lists of this type usually look at health (life expectancy, infant mortality etc.), pollution (smog, etc.), crime, level of corruption, access to amenities (culture/recreation etc.), gdp per capita, sometimes median income etc.

Ideally the full methodology would be online, perhaps someone else will have better luck finding it.

***

Vancouver ranks well for being fairly safe, moderate climate, high standard of living etc. But like most places on the list than rank highly, its an expensive place to live.

That does put more burden on those who find themselves at the lower end of the economic spectrum, and to some extent, on those in the middle too.

Vancouver and Toronto above Montreal is ridiculous, San Francisco belongs nowhere on a North American livable list for obvious reasons.

The reality is internet lists are just internet lists and have little to no bearing on the real world, data and methodologies can be manipulated to say anything you want. The only reason they're produced is to promote a company and get cited in articles for free advertising.

What does livable even mean? I'm (or someone in Paris, New York, Sydney, London, Amsterdam) not living compared to someone in Munich or Ottawa? I'd cry if I had to live in either.

Stupid nonsense and extremely subjective. Stop posting stupid lists. Maybe we should create out own 'livable' study based on the things we like and try to pass it around as fact.

Metrics changed depending on who is compiling it but its usually some combo of walkability, easy access to food and social services and blah blah

which gives you very expensive urban cities in moderate climates.

Which are very livable for , certain people with certain lifestyles, there are plenty of working class families that don't find places like Vancouver and San Francisco livable at all but love places like Riverside and Mesa, and Subruban Atlanta as the most livable places for entirely different reasons.

That's why you cant really worry to much about this kind of subjective stuff.

Vancouver real estate prices are obscene and it could do with more 'stuff' but it's the most beautiful city I've ever seen. Just walking around it was a treat.

I think Flagstaff's "official" nickname is "The City of Seven Wonders," one of which is "I wonder why the cost of living here is so high!?" The second is "I wonder when all these Californians and Phoenicians will stop coming here?"

So yeah, not exactly livable. Our unofficial slogans are "poverty with a view" and "the only thing higher than the elevation are the people."

Am I correct in assuming you're not writing this from your work computer

or is your HR department as incompetent as most companies, mine included?

Misread the title as saying Merced was the most livable city.
